More thriller than horror but Sanctuary is fucking great holy shit. I watched Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down recently and found it kind of icky. Sanctuary, though, is deliciously twisted, and twisty, and so perfectly performed. Definitely leans more into psychological thriller than something feel-good and physical like Secretary but ugh this is the kind of shit I wish got the kind of attention fucking 50 Shades did. Margaret Qualley is phenomenal.

Edit: I can't believe I forgot about The Phantom Thread. Sanctuary is more similar to that than it is any of the other aforementioned films

Just realized I got the 1993 The Vanishing with Jeff Bridges and not the 1988 Dutch film The Vanishing for Gourley and Rust.

Hosting our movie club tomorrow night and doing Funny Games. We’re gonna be serving deviled eggs, hard boiled eggs, and a fake egg dessert using lil pretzels and yellow m&m’s. I’m also going to do my best to drop several eggs in the kitchen before we start the movie as an act since these people have not seen the movie, hoping it will land later in a funny way.

  7. Man, I was not in the right headspace when I watched Funny Games. That's a tough one.

Messiah of Evil rules. The supermarket and movie theater scenes are so cool.

    Some more short horror reviews!

Slasher: Ripper - Pretty disappointed overall by this season of Slasher. After Flesh and Blood, I expected some gnarly gory moments, but they dialed it back quite a bit. Still had a few fun scenes, but a lot of it happened off screen this time around. Thought the story was fine, but I couldn't really care less about the characters. Hope the next season is a better one. 2.5/5

Nocebo - Eva Green in anything horror related is an instant watch for me, thanks to Penny Dreadful. Pretty good psychological horror for the most part. Green was great and I also enjoyed Chai Fonacier's performance. 3/5

The Cursed - Returned to this after getting about 40 minutes into it a couple months ago. First half was a drag for me, but when it got going I really enjoyed the ride. Has some great practical effects! 3/5

High Tension - Something about the twist just didn't hit for me. Idk, just felt confused. Right after it happened, I paused it and googled to see if this was a supernatural film haha. Twist aside, I had a good time with it. That first kill was wild. 3/5

The Boogeyman - I went to see this last night. Thought it was pretty good. May be a little too jumpscary for some. I'm a big fan of Sophie Thatcher's performance in Yellowjackets so I really enjoyed seeing her as the lead in this one. I'm noticing a trend with a lot of creature designs in mainstream horror films and even in some smaller ones. Really thin with long limbs. But yeah, worth a watch, imo. 3/5

I’ll definitely see The Boogeyman at some point but was curious about how run of the mill it might end up being. Have remained hopeful that it would continue the trend of surprisingly solid modern horror movies that we’ve been getting over the course of the past year.

I watched Stake Land after Cody Leach recommended it in a video.

it was very bleak but I enjoyed it. Much better than expected

Found a F13 Part 3 at Goodwill with the 3D glasses inside. Wouldn’t have gotten it if they weren’t included tbh. I thought they were older at first, but the inside of the sides say 09. Still cool though.

I wouldn't say it's my favorite, but for some reason I find myself going to F13 Part 3 more than any other.
