New Nightmare hits different when you're from Southern California, the actual footage of the aftermath of the Northridge quake is really surreal. I've mentioned this before, but the last time my girlfriend and I watched it in 2019, about 20 minutes after it ended there was a huge earthquake. It was creepy as hell.

It's definitely between Aster and Peele for me, but I love Eggers too in different ways so it's all a win, win, win. How blessed are we to be around while all 3 are creating films at the same time!

I’d say Aster is ahead and Eggers/Peele are about tied.

for me, but all three are wonderful. It's funny seeing different people on Twitter saying each of them are clearly better than the other two.

  5. Yeah, it's really, really splitting hairs; I mean, they're not even comparable stylistically. And all three have legitimate five-star home runs in their filmography, so even if I'm tempted to put Aster ahead, there are absolutely times where I'd rather watch Nope or The Lighthouse than Hereditary. Winners all around

Peele's movies are by far more for me. I loved the VVItch and The Lighthouse and still need to watch Northman. Aster really isn't for me, I think I'll probably finally pull the trigger on Midsommar soon though.

  7. Hah EDR was awesome. Shit was fucking gross, add that to the list of things I'll never watch again lolol. I think I like 2013 more overall because it's got a generous bit of campiness to even out the dread, but the claustrophobia of this new one just hits different, and I do like the family dynamic at the center of it.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

New Nightmare has 4 kills which is... the exact same amount of kills as the original NOES. it actually would have had more if they'd got to film Englund's death scene but they ran out of budget for it. I just think it's a weird thing to fixate on lol, kills and quality are not in direct correlation

just got out of EDR and unfortunately the experience was pretty much entirely ruined for me and my partner bc no one else in the theater would shut the fuck up for even one second during the entire movie.

  10. They are when we're talking slasher films lol

besides, that was one of like three reasons it doesn't work for me. Not fixated on it at all. But it's definitely a valid criticism

I guess I just find the NOES films more interesting than just "how many people died in this movie" lol. so much more going on creatively that I'm more interested in. just a divergence in taste I guess, says a lot that I find the standard slashers like most of F13 extremely boring

I really need to read some Grady Hendrix, but I just have the lowest expectations. Paperbacks From Hell is great for the art, but his writing is so cheesy and I can just TELL that his fiction would bother me even more, haha. Still, the premises always sound so fun and I know people love his stuff, so maybe I’ll just go in expecting something fun and dumb and read one of his books.

As for a DGG Exorcist reboot, no fucking thank you.

Quite limited on torture options here. Curious if jigsaw would put everybody in space suits or if he’s set up camp on the moon.

Gourley and Rust did an unboxing of that The Shining Taschen book and it looks dope as hell. I wish I had $1500 to blow on one.
