Somehow I have missed Magnitude every time they have played Philly in the last year. But seeing them open for Have Heart in Brooklyn. also props to Drain on this Neck Deep tour for essentially exposing these pop punk kids to hardcore and explaining how things were gonna happen and happening as they happen, complete with “no one is gonna hurt you” they def are walking out of this tour with a ton of new fans and hardcore in general.
Saw Fugitive and Diztort last night. Both rocked but I gotta shout out Doomsday. Sick Bay Area thrash band who opened the show
I've never listened to them on record but saw Frail Body open for Knoll and Wolf King and thought they stole the show
can anyone give me like, the broadest lay of the land in this scene nowadays? i’ve been away a long time. what kind of subgenres or styles are big now? whats the status of, like, “pure” hardcore, where no more specific subgenres can better describe it than just simply “hardcore punk”? i always (since i was a teen anyway) gravitated towards that more than the more metalcore infused stuff, but I’m open minded and also really like hardcore that includes elements from “softer” genres, the Turnstile album and Jesus Lizard - Goat (which i heard for the first time a few weeks ago) come to mind although obviously those two do that in very different ways
A lot of the biggest bands are doing the Merauder/All Out War/Hatebreed heavy hardcore thing, but if you glean the bandcamp pages for labels like Convulse, Quality Control, Painkiller you’ll probably find bands closer to what you’re looking for. There’s something for everyone right now. since you mentioned them, the touring guitarist for Turnstile plays in a band called Big Cheese that fits the description for what you’re after. That band is tight
If you actually want straight forward "hardcore punk" I feel like the go to right now in my mind is Restraining Order.
Youth Crew is 100% coming back: bands like Magnitude, Envision, etc. Daze is popping off these days if you are into knuckle dragging hard as hell hardcore. If you are into metallic Hardcore from the 90’s like Prayer For Cleansing then that sound is 100% back and definitely check out labels like The Coming Strife and Ephyra.
I'll just go with the hardcore bands I really like right now shtick. Everything kinda bleeds together for me so it keeps it easy and breezy: Rabbit Age of Apocalypse Bulls Shitt Witness Chamber Burning Lord C4 Scarab Mindforce Stand Still Swamp Thing Bolt Thrower
I feel like the definition of down-the-middle hardcore varies depending on who you ask and what they grew up with, but when you say "pure" hardcore punk I think of bands like Nosferatu, which definitely seem to be popping up more and more in recent years.
If you're looking for something that embodies the down the middle hardcore spirit the way it originated back in the 80s, Roachleg stuff is a pretty safe bet tbh.
