It really is. Killer riffs and a good balance of heaviness and melody. Going to be jamming that one a lot.
^I like most of those bands, but I just don't seem any of them capturing that same lightning in a bottle that Turnstile had with Glow On.
I refuse to expect another hardcore band to break the way Turnstile has. Seems like a fools errand. That said, if we reframed it as hardcore bands that could grow this year and make some noise or whatever the case, then I agree with a lot of those. Some of those bands are still really early in their trajectory.
Agreed. None of those bands have the mass appeal that Turnstile has as well. All great bands but still very much “hardcore”.
Been listening to this Instep band from Montreal a good amount. Kind of has that Title Fight, early Such Gold, and Anxious thing going on. Being a demo it’s still pretty raw in places, but I think there is something there overall.
Koyo or Anxious probably has the best chance on that list, but I still don't see them getting the crossover appeal that Turnstile has.
Koyo and Anxious feel less like hardcore bands and more of a callback to the whole Transit/Such Gold style of pop-punk. Personally I don't vibe with the new Koyo EP at all, I thought the first EP was much better.
Stand Still is covering the exact same vein as Koyo and is a lot more palatable to me...I'm just not a fan of the way the vocalist from Koyo does his singing. It reminds me of mid-00s popular emo in ways that I'm not a fan of. That said, in things from this year, I'm really digging the new Dull Mourning release and it has whiny mid-00s vocals too but with a nice Quicksand like groovy post-hardcore vibe under it that puts it more in the realm of Vheissu-era Thrice to my ears. Probably a bit contradictory but it is what it is.
I feel like Koyo is gaining a lot more hype and steam than Stand Still but both are great. I think that’s due in part to the fact that they tour like crazy and don’t care who they tour with. The vocalist from Koyo has a Vinnie (The Movielife, etc sound) so its understandable.
There's another Koyo on spotify. I saw a bunch of people talking about the painting words EP so I did a quick search and clicked on the other band. I didn't see that ep but I still listened for a few minutes. "This isn't hardcore." hahaha
