Hot take but sunami sucks

 

They’re not great but they hit that sweet spot of ignorant ass hardcore for me.

 

And I somehow copped a copy of the Closed Casket exclusive pressing. Stoked about that.

The split is also what I needed right now. The Gulch tracks might be some of their best work yet. The Sunami tracks are dope too.

 

That style of hardcore might be my least favorite. Like that new Gods Hate track that dropped does nothing for me.

 

Both are sort of gimmick acts in my opinion.

Sunami doesn’t do much for me and the new tracks are more of the same.

Gulch tracks are pretty good.

 

This is pretty good. Is ‘BHC’ really part of the name?

I kinda think of Sunami as a novelty act, but Impenetrable Cerebral Fortress is a legitimately good record. I feel like Gulch is something more.

There is a good article out there where the band in perceived more as a brand than a band. I’ll try and find it.

 

I am curious what you think Gulch’s gimmick is. I don’t mean to ask it in an attacking manner. The live sets I see seem genuine to me. I think that general San Jose scene is cut a little differently than other folks for sure.

Some of the Twitter/social media stuff from the band members can be whatever, but I am also not the most online person, so a lot of “hardcore Twitter” goes past me haha. I don’t think it’s on them that a bunch of people turned them into a hype/merch band. I think the actual music is really good and blends a lot of cool styles together. And it’s not often to find a front person like Elliott. I think it’s cool a band that is that abrasive is actually gaining that kind of momentum. Clearly their style of music won’t be for everyone.

 

They set the wheels in motion with their merch and the fans will follow suit. That gag item did them no favors, especially on social media. I do agree their music is unique and I look forward to whatever they put out. It’s not always for me but someone out there will enjoy it.

 

I will say that the Bay Area has been killing it lately

Like I still spin that Drain record a bit, hopefully I can see them tour in the near future.

 

Yeah I personally try to separate some of the merch stuff with bands bc that’s ultimately on the consumers imo.

I love Fiddlehead and look forward to their new music, but I distinctly remember being at LDB last year and a bunch of Fiddlehead fans waited in a long ass line (like out the door long) for their merch instead of watching the band actually play. Def not the best move for Gulch to post a fake item, but the whole Gulch hoodie thing was insane haha. At least they weren’t overcharging for the hoodie from what I remember.
