So far this seems to be leading up to The Testaments, and my take on Luke being upset at the end (based on The Testaments) is that he knows June needs to go underground now. There’s no way for her to live her life comfortably in Canada after that.

I'm only on episode 3 of the new season but I don't get why anyone finds June the unlikeable one on this show. With all the despicable people in Gilead I am almost always on her side and rooting for her. She is constantly put in the worst situations and is just trying to do her best. What she did in this episode was maybe the worst thing she's done so far but I'm not sure I can really blame her under the circumstances.

I do think it needs to end soon though, if it were up to me I'd have next season be the last.

Not so much that I find June unlikeable, but I don’t understand some things she does. Like how does she love Nick after what he does to her (i think in that episode). I was just left confused and frustrated.

I have more of an issue with how the show repeats itself, the plot extends itself or backtracks, and it often feels disingenuous to the story and for the purpose of adding more seasons.

And I know it’s a show and we are supposed to suspend disbelief but there’s just so many times that just based on we know of the shows universe that they would have just killed June a million different times in the first season alone

Nick I think gets away with it because he's one of the few there who still show her affection and I think he's using his position to try and help her. Idk if it's a relationship that would last long on the outside though, ha.

Absolutely agree with the second part though, I was majorly annoyed in both seasons 2 and 3 about it backtracking too much but both times it ended up winning me over. I thought it was going to do the same this season until they escaped at the end of the episode which I was very happy about. I'm really hoping it can start to move into the endgame now and can be more about them taking Gilead down rather than June just getting captured again. We'll see.

I don’t buy that Nick reasoning tbh. To me, he was extremely manipulative ESPECIALLY when she’s captured and is given another chance to see Hannah. I get that he thinks she’ll be killed otherwise, but it’s still all in service of Gilead and unbelievably toxic and I just don’t understand why June gives him this big thankful smooch at the end of that whole fiasco—I was cringing so hard at that moment.

I think he's an asshole I can just see why someone as broken as her would cling to him. Manipulative people are good at getting people to feel for them. I'm not sure it's all that rational or real but I can buy it.

I quit on this show early last (4th) season. The writing seemed to drop in quality so suddenly that my wife and I were stunned by the GOT-ness of the early episodes. It used to be one of the best shows out IMO, but fell to its own devices—sorta became like “trauma porn” without the nuance which separated it from truly being that.

We just started reading the book in class and I know my students are going to try and cheat by watching the show. How divergent is it?

Very. The first season ends exactly where the book does (other than the epilogue of Gileadean Studies) and the rest that has followed after is mostly all new. That said, there are elements in the book that the first season doesn’t even touch on like June’s mother. Her flashbacks and story come later in the series and it’s an important piece of the story because it addresses June’s upbringing under a second-wave feminist while June’s a child of the post-feminist 80s who’s embarrassed by her mother.

I’ve only seen the first episode and I don’t remember what’s going on. And it seems like nobody is really talking about this show anymore

I was wondering to myself yesterday if this was just an example of a pre pandemic feeling where people didn’t mind this drab, dreary dystopian setting but then with how everything has played out and things lightening up now if people just don’t have the energy for the constant negative emotions the show brings. At first it was an interesting parallel with what’s going on in the world but now we are tired of being hopeless
