Sold my HX Stomp XL (just couldn’t get along with all the menus) and went a little wild with the Sweetwater sales.
Just bought a pink Tom DeLonge Starcaster. first official Fender guitar I actually bought and didn’t build myself. Pretty wild to think about. It was between that and his Fender strat. Decided on the Starcaster because it’s so unique and has my all time favorite pickup in it. Plus I already own the old TD Squier strat. It’s falling apart which is why I was tempted by the reissue strat. Make it official with the Fender version lol. Maybe another time. I hope Fender releases the Mark Hoppus Jazz Bass too. I’d get one of those. Probably won’t happen, if not for awhile, since his new Jaguar just released.
my buddy that I was in bands with for most of my teens/20s bought the Mark Hoppus J Bass way back in the day and playing it on occasion it set the standard for what I want a bass to feel like for a very long time (I am a short scale guy now lol)
Same here. Was in a band of 4 and 3 of us were guitarists so we switched off who played bass a lot. One my friends in the band had the MH jazz bass and a Geddy Lee jazz bass. Those two basses shaped how I play bass to this day haha.
Yup, super glad I went with the shell pink! It’s a much lighter and brighter pink in person. The neck on this thing is SUPERB. So superb that I want another one. It just plays so good. I’m SHOCKED. I was expecting this thing to feel clunky and big like an ES-335, but it’s like an ES-339 meets fender offset comfort.
i got a hiwatt custom 20 for a steal and i dig it a lot but already dreaming of having ned clayton build me a micro t again
Well, they were all pretty lackluster and I sent them back. Thinking about a Boss TR-2, DD-8, IR-2 setup.
Got myself an early Christmas present - I’ve been eyeing one for a while and finally pulled the trigger. About as close to my dream guitar as I can get I think
I think this is gonna be my setup for a while. Carpal tunnel is gonna force me to start using lighter strings.
That’s how I felt when I tried flats and half-rounds on my bass, but I’ve not tried flats on my guitars. Pros? Cons?
as far as objective stuff, the pros are that you have less string noise sliding between chords and the strings last a lot longer. cons being they get dirties before they lose their tone so you have to clean them more often and they're more difficult to bend subjectively, they have less brightness but IMO more of a warm/acoustic/real tone. lack of brightness could be a con but the """earthiness""" of the flats is more of a pro to me.
also the brand i switched to (thomastik) has less tension than most other flat manufacturers so bending isn't quite as difficult as with pyramids/labellas. i'd just stay away from the ernie ball ones. they're basically just roundwounds without the string sliding noise.
NGD. First time buying off Reverb. I got lucky, and this one actually plays great. The Fiesta Red looks amazing in person.
@phaynes12 and other Les Paul owners: Have you had issues with the tuners at all? I recently got a Les Paul Special DC and everything is phenomenal on it except that the B string is really hard to get in tune because the tuner has a ton of looseness at spots so I'm not getting the same kind of ratios I'm getting with the other tuners. I'm not really familiar with the tuners themselves so I don't know how to actually address it, have seen some stuff online but wanted to get some firsthand experience from here too. And if the tuners are just ass are there replacement tuners that you'd recommend?
i don’t own one anymore but i would recommend switching to some grover vintage ones (they’re like $50 don’t let the name fool you), they’ll help with the neck weight too though this is a bit more of a SG issue
Very good to know thank you, I might go this route with my SG as well, I haven't had the same tuning issues with it but the neck weight help is a big sell
yeah are a lot of options but yeah generally any of the ivory vintage style tuners are gonna be lighter than the default metal ones gibson uses
im playing my first show in this town soon (opening for sadurn!) so i impulse bought pedals. excited haha
Update on mods I previously said I would make on my Tele, plus the guy at my local shop added a new switch & output jack. This thing rips. The Chopper T is worth all the hype and then some. Pairs nicely with the Jazzmaster pickup too.
I went to 9s and have no regrets at all. I honestly could move to 8s or 8.5s lol. I don’t really notice any tone differences and my touch has gotten noticeably lighter. However when I go to an acoustic I hate things lol
i got a ministrobe tuner pedal and a walrus reverb. also on the hunt for this obscure russian model t clone pedal that uses real tubes. i got a guy in new orleans to grab it from his storage unit in sf but then he started asking me to pay him thru venmo instead of paypal g&s, and i got sketched out so was like yo can't do that. and then he didn't want to sell it to me anymore lol.
