Hey everyone, I am currently looking for a good beginner guitar. My wife has an acoustic guitar, but I'd really like to get a decently priced beginner electric guitar to learn on. Any suggestions of where to start?

I started on something similar to this:

Squier Affinity Stratocaster Electric Guitar Pack w/ 10G Amplifier

To be honest it was a good deal for a beginner, comes with everything you need to practice. I'm sure people scoff at "value packs" but you never know if someone will enjoy it, as well as follow through and actually practice, so there is no point in getting anything too expensive. Once you start getting your feet off the ground you can start upgrading your equipment piece by piece.

I have to say, I wish I started on acoustic. It's rougher to play but it helps build your finger strength because the action on cheap acoustics can be pretty high. When you move to an electric it will feel like you have unreal dexterity, haha.

I second this. I started on a cheap Squier acoustic with insanely high action. Hated it at the time, but it built up my finger strength. Moved over to a cheap Ibanez electric less than a year later. Made a huge difference.

Thanks for the advice! I might stick with the acoustic my wife has for a little bit then. Did you guys take lessons or just teach yourself?

Started with lessons, but slowly started self-teaching about a couple years after.

Good deal. I just got an acoustic and think lessons are going to be a must for me, because I know zero going in.

    Nystrum Jazzmaster.

I had an ac15c1 but sold it. Looking at the new ac10c1. Lighter and great sounding imo

Thinking of upgrading my practice amp to a Fender Princeton Chorus. Looking to get it for around $200, which seems to be the sweet spot for a used amp like this. Anyone play it and have postive/negative things to say about it?

Have never seen a Jazzmaster with one pickup. Love Jazzmasters though. If I didn't have a Jaguar, I would get a Jazzmaster.

I started teaching myself guitar with tabs and etc. but then became interested in music theory and truly understanding what I was playing, so I took lessons for 2 years. Really helped me a lot and I became not just a better guitarist, but musician in general. I play multiple other instruments.

Yeah jazzmasters are pretty trendy these pay few years. I liked having a simple guitar with one pickup and two knobs. I played a strat the other day and I really liked playing with all the different pickups so I think I might be gearing towards a different guitar in the future

Been thinking about pulling the trigger on a Jag. Played one at a GC and I really dug it.

Speaking of GC, not sure how people feel about Jared Dines videos but I found this to be a great parody of the issues I have whenever I go into one.

anyone got experience with midi pickups?

I was looking into a Roland one years ago but never bought one. Now my interest in it is back and I see this new Fishman Triple Play pickup. Anyone used one? I hear it tracks the best. But I'm worried with it being wireless about latency. Seems like an extremely odd design choice

I'm alternate picking clean at 180-185bpm now (using content over all 6 strings, not picking stationary). Used to be 160 for the longest but I hit it hard for a couple months and got faster! I'm setting a goal for 210 by the end of the year. I have developed a few really useful alternate picking exercises for myself and my students if anyone is interested in those.

Also, I'm building a custom Carvin, so anyone who wants to talk woods with me please do! I know I want a maple fret board, that's all I'm set on. Let me know what you think the differences between woods are for the body/neck and if you have a favorite. My plan is to build something totally my own and have it be like my everyday use/all around type of guitar that can do anything.

Oooooh. I hadn't seen this thread before.

I happened to add a new guitar to my stable at the weekend. My first ever acoustic and it was an absolute steal.

Does anyone else here build guitar stuff? I have a whole shelf of pedals I've built, but I've not done one for a while. :(

I'd love to hear about some techniques for improving anything tbh. I've been stuck in a rut for years.

  22. Drewski

    Maybe so, maybe not.

@MrCon I'm in the market for an acoustic (would also be my first). What did you go with?

@Drewski I got a Faith Venus, High Gloss series. It was an ex demo, so I got it with a hard case for £500, instead of the usual £800. I had been aiming to the get the lower model (the Natural series, which are £650), so I really lucked out with that. I don't know if Faith are all that well known in the US. I guess Seagull and Sigma would be close in terms of what they do.

I don't know what budget you have and whether you play electric. I guess £500-650 sounds like a lot for a first guitar, but I've been playing electric for 14 years or something, so I was never going to buy a cheap one.

When I was researching it, my understanding was that getting something with solid back and sides (rather than laminate) was a good place to start. The cheapest I've seen that done are the Faith Naked series and the Fender Paramounts.
