Also I cba ranking all their songs, but Six Feet, Coffee Shop, Lullabies, Weightless and If These Sheets Were The States are my personal favourites.
The more I listen to it and remember the summer tour the more I realize that LYR is the best record they've ever made. Even though I enjoy SWIR and PUOSU more, this record is their best writing. I just wish it had the promotion that FH had behind it. I guess that's what happens when they go from the biggest band on a label to around the middle on another label.
I wouldn't go that far, but definitely seems like a mostly generic pop song to me. Definitely one of my least favorites on the album.
Yeah they're both great songs but Afterglow is just one of the best All Time Low songs ever. Oh well. Also I know Last Young Renegade is probably the most "classic"-sounding song on this thing but, come on, Ground Control is a better song.
Last Young Renegade connects with me more than Ground Control does. I definitely think Ground Control is a superior song from a songwriting perspective, though
There's a lot of disagreement on this record. I don't understand how people can say this is their best album or best writing. There are like two-three rock songs on this album, and the rest is just pure generic pop shit. It sounds to me like it's just Alex making music on his MacBook and putting filters on the vocals. I guess they couldn't stay pop punk in 2017, when all their label mates were making money on pop music. This is their worst album, at least sonically.
Of course, haha. It's not a tribute to the album, it's my avatar only while we're doing this LYR bracket.
Wow, I completely disagree with this take. This is without a doubt Alex's best songwriting to date and definitely my favorite ATL album
I think you're really oversimplifying what goes into a pop song here. This is not generic pop music, it's still very much All Time Low making pop music. Pop does not by default = generic. There's plenty of instruments throughout this album. A lot of what I think you think is Alex making music on a MacBook is actually Jack running his guitar through different filters. And I don't think it's fair to say that they're doing this just to make money either. As far back as The Party Scene they've shown a desire to experiment with pop sounds (Sticks, Stones, and Techno), and amplified that more on Nothing Personal. I think the reason a lot of people really vibe with this album is it sounds like a band actually stepping into the sound they want instead of holding themselves back because of what they worry their fans' expectations are. All Time Low has always leaned heavily on the pop side of pop-punk, and they truly own that on this album.
LYR is their best writing, FH connects to me more personally, both are great albums Also, I sorta wish I’d voted for Afterglow, but Good Times is worthy too.
This exactly. To me, a lot of Dirty Work feels like a shallow attempt to get big. LYR has always sounded completely genuine to me and still has ATL vibes all over it. I’m not trying to trash Dirty Work or anything, I still like a lot of that album, that was just for comparison’s sake.
i'd go as far as to say Nothing Personal is poppier than this album. it's not "in the pop genre" per se, but poppier, catchier. the hooks grab you like nothing else they've ever done. just cause it has guitars and 140bpm songs it doesn't mean it's not pop. LYR has some subtler stuff, and some straight-up weaker stuff too. it took a while to grow on me. i don't think it's their best songwriting, it comes short at times, but it's definitely not "generic pop stuff". i think the discussion goes much deeper than that
Whichever genre people would say the band is, they have always played music using real guitars, drums and bass. Now they sound all too electronic. And I call it generic because the songs lack originality, and they're clearly a play for radio or whatever, it's so predictable what people like these days. Not judging anyone here for liking the album. This is just my opinion. There's no right or wrong.
Registered just because these bracket competitions seems fun. Not the biggest ATL fan (Saw them live in 2008 and surprisingly met them sitting in an empty fountain in the middle of the night some hours later. They had no time to get back to their hotel and was going to miss their flight to the next country that night). Listening to this album for just the second time now.
