Man. I understand why they’re wrapping it up or at least retiring the Dead & Co name from touring but for my money this is the best this group has ever sounded. Maybe it’s sacrilege but I think Jay brings some spark and pushes the tempo in a way that the Billy/Mickey combo just doesn’t at this point. I hope Mayer finds his way back to these songs in some capacity down the road. Partially because I’m not a Phish guy (although I actually do like Trey’s voice strangely enough) he’s been my favorite post-Jerry pairing with Bobby that I’ve heard. And then the guitar side of things is just obvious and has been beaten to death
What a way to close it out, love them opening night one in SF and closing the final night with Not Fade Away
5/23/72 deserves to be talked about as one of *those* shows if it isn’t already. If nothing else on a very short list of the absolute best all around vocal performances from everyone in the band
Crazy numbers for the D&C tour. 840k attendees. https://www.billboard.com/music/roc...ur-most-successful-by-the-numbers-1235375162/
So I have read this incredible Jeff Weiss piece that came out recently and now I've been getting into this band for the first time ever. I was aware of the whole circus of course but I never really listened to them before, and it turns out that they make different music than I thought they did. Anyway, I've been liking what I have heard so far, and Jeff Weiss does give recommendations in the piece, but what do you recommend?
He is correct when he says that their catalog is not impenetrable at all and that “American Beauty/Workingman’s Dead/5/08/77 seem obvious entries.” I started with those three plus the Sunshine Daydream concert (Veneta, OR) and Europe ‘72. Then just wander wherever your interest takes you. The studio albums are mostly better than people say and once you’ve mined the 70s live stuff pretty deeply don’t forget the check out 1989/90
Does there exist the perfect combination of words that will make sure Moose loves 5/8/77 and becomes a Deadhead?? Definitely haven't found it yet but crossing my fingers. There's really no way to say it without sounding stereotypical but there is magic there and I hope you find it.
Also I stand by this I made and posted in the second post of this thread, I think it's most useful as a broad guide to the eras of the band but it also works as an intro flowchart kinda. To get the full pictures of the eras of the band you have to learn about the keyboard players and 1 vs 2 drummers and the coma but it's a decent overview
I listened to it on a walk. Didn’t make it through the whole thing obviously, my walks aren’t that long, but I enjoyed it. I feel like my mind wanders a little too much to really get into it though, if that makes sense.
The thing is, when you’re in jam band spaces online, they are infested with boomers who have been making this kind of joke for literally 50 years and still think it’s the funniest thing ever. Just can’t act like that. my OP is bad enough
Anyway I’d love to see them again but a Vegas residency ain’t it for me. Hoping this means the usual 4th of July shows in CO happen, might check those out
