Is there some specific criteria for best new artist? Like do they have to sell so many records or something to qualify?
The official guidelines are as follows: "For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist."
According to Wikipedia: * The official guidelines are as follows: "For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist." Note that this is not necessarily the first album released by an artist. Over the years, the eligibility rules for this category have changed several times. In 2010, Lady Gaga's exclusion from the Best New Artist category caused the Recording Academy to change eligibility requirements for the next ceremony. She was ineligible for the nomination because her hit "Just Dance" had been nominated in 2008. The new rule stated that an artist can be nominated as long as that artist has not previously released an entire album and has subsequently not won a Grammy.[12][13] In June 2016, the Grammy organization amended the Best New Artist rules once again, to remove the album barrier “given current trends in how new music and developing artists are released and promoted”.[14] To be eligible in the category of Best New Artist, the artist, duo, or group: Must have released a minimum of five singles/tracks or one album, but no more than 30 singles/tracks or three albums. May not have entered into this category more than three times, including as a performing member of an established group. Must have achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness and impacted the musical landscape during the eligibility period.
Ya I like the song too! I just don’t understand why it was played on the Grammys 3 years later when the band had no reason to be there to begin with. You’d think they’d get one of the nominated bands if they were trying to throw a rock band in. I would’ve been way more into having Arctic Monkeys perform this year, for example.
I think it's very possible Post Malone requested RHCP? Afterall, he did play with the entire band throughout the performance so I'm sure he wanted to perform with a band that he'd be comfortable playing along with.
I really liked that Drake speech. Cardi's too, it was humbling to see how emotion she got. And damn, I really wish Gambino was there to accept. Everyone is saying he didn't go in protest of the Grammy's treatment of hip hop, but has that been confirmed? Cuz he came last year and even performed. First hip hop song to win Song of the Year. I think the better protest would have been getting up to accept and ranting how this has been like 15 years overdue.
i like when Alicia said "Rap speeches get shorter every year" or something like that. It was some sort of slight like that, and I loved it, haha.
i think it was like "the wrap music is coming sooner and sooner as the night goes on, huh?" it was awesome
I'm still annoyed Panic! at the Disco was given no acknowledgement at all last night. Have they ever performed at the Grammys? When do they get to?
I keep forgetting that P!ATD is relevant again. I really can't stand their new stuff at all. That High Hopes song starts off with what sounds like Brendon Urie impersonating an animal wailing in pain.
I don't get the Panic hype either. I took my little cousin to see him and I thought he gave an incredible performance it was honestly a blast, but I've listened to all the records several times and they hold zero appeal to me. But it seems like he's worked hard and puts a lot of effort in I think that'd be a better Grammy performance than a lot of the ones the last couple years.
I actually somewhat surprised that High Hopes wasn't nominated for anything, especially given that they've expanded the categories to more than 5. AND because Death of a Bachelor was Grammy nominated and this album has had far more commercial success.
It kind of sounds like you do get the hype, it's just not for you, which is obviously ok. I don't know that the album as a whole has had more commercial success. Just High Hopes. DOAB was a pretty huge album. Nonetheless I agree it's odd there was no nominations.
A lot of it comes down to campaigning and I dont think FBR has ever really been about that. It is kind of surprising the album didn’t get an alt-rock nomination, considering it’s in the same vein as Beck.
But Fall Out Boy was nominated, Paramore has won Grammys for S/T, twenty one pilots was up for rock song and has been up before, so they do put some weight behind their heavy hitters. I'm sure they at least entered it in the categories. But literally like Drake said who even cares at the end of the day I didn't mean to turn this whole thread into a Panic thread haha
