i think it's more of a homage, and it's crafted in a refreshing way. his music is the kind that won't really be many people's absolute favorite - it's inoffensive, as you put it - but you can't really hate it or avoid tapping your foot to it either. it has that feel good vibe but with more substance, something that has been severely lacking on top 40 radio for a couple years now. so, not as important as its competition but def not a forgettable album imo

Ugh. I like Bruno Mars but him winning AOTY over both Kendrick and Lorde is as upsetting to me (and more shocking) than 1989 beating out To Pimp a Butterfly. Would've taken Jay-Z or Childish Gambino over him based on artistic merit. This is the exact outcome that was primed to make me mad at the Grammys again.

I think Bruno Mars is like the Adele of male pop music in that his stuff has a universal appeal to it. In that sense, I understand him winning. But that's also the reason it frustrates me. Also, him winning Record of the Year... Did voters just decide they'd given Kendrick too many of the lesser awards to give him the big ones too? I'd really be fascinated to see how it works.

Pretty sure Sam Smith is the Adele of male pop music. Stand by everything else you said though

Oh, for sure! I was speaking less on style and more on widespread fame and how many people love him across different age brackets.

Couldn't make room for an Album of the Year nominee, but we had plenty of time for a Shaggy/Sting duet and a Hillary Clinton bit.

Was last night the first time ever they televised the Comedy album award? Not complaining, because there were some heavy hitters in that category and happy to see Gaffigan get some spotlight, but it seems to me they just televised it to get some big name comedians to show up. Found it odd they televised that over some bigger music categories.

Absolutely insane that Ed Sheeran could win any awards over literally any one of the other women in those categories. And at least the best pop performance it kind of makes sense since it was the biggest song out of those. But winning best pop vocal album? Are you kidding? Since when has Ed Sheeran been known for his voice? I thought his shtick was always the singer songwriter things more than an astounding voice. Did they even realize what category they were voting for?

As for the Bruno sweep, it's a boring as hell pick, but it's the type of album the grammys have always rewarded (or at least since I've ever paid attention). The most safe, made for mass appeal albums have won for years. Truly gut wrenching that Lorde waked away with nothing though.

Kind of hilarious that even in it's "woke" year they still can't manage to get it right. No doubt they thought they were set because they had a lot of POC, but that was some really awful timing to snub women. And trying to say they couldn't have Lorde perform is just ridiculous. They were literally just telling her "hey you didn't have a big enough hit from this album so you know we don't want to waste our time". Imagine what we have now missed because of it.

At least there was justice for Portugal. the Man.

My rants not over because I'm just sitting here thinking about how they wanted to give Lorde the same treatment as Miley Cyrus, in a year where they both released an album, one of which was nominated for album of the year and was a critical triumph, and one which was completely shut out and was panned (for good reason). And I like Miley, but it completely makes sense why she would perform with Elton, whereas it makes no sense why Lorde would not be performing one of her songs. Could you imagine if they let Lorde do Homemade Dynamite. She could've had SZA, Post Malone, and Khalid all play with her. Would've been one of the best performances of the night.

Bruno Mars winning album of the year kinda blows my mind. Who the hell listens to a full album of Bruno Mars?

I hope Kendrick is done giving them great performances, it all seems so irrelevant and pointless

I mean I don't think the point of his performances is to convince the Grammy voters to award him album of the year. I think it's more important that he has a platform to spread his message to as many people as possible.

Yeah but viewership is down, the awards are being seen as less and less relevant, and they're still bad at recognizing the most cultural impactful releases. Lot of reasons to join Kanye and Frank and just skip it.

Yea I mean I get the point you're making, but he still reaches people he wouldn't otherwise reach this way. He has more to gain from playing it than from not.
