TGUK slayed tonight in Chicago. It was my second time seeing them perform STWHA and second time since James was let go. I miss his energy , Jim and James were always the ones that brought it. Now it’s just Jim mainly. Encore was beefy and I’m glad it wasn’t sold out so there was breathing room. Picked up the tour shirt on that comfort colors. Fun Thursday night accomplished.
I just saw this comment , he’s got it back and he sounded fantastic. Said they canceled Ohio for it? I didn’t realize the tour started in August until I got the tour shirt with the dates on the back. They’ve been out for a while now!
Yeah, gonna try to see them in Louisville. Never seen Hot Rod Circuit live and they're one of my favorites.
I don't fully understand, but Matt started a substack chronicaling his next album Archive - Worse For The Wear by Matt Pryor
I'm not very online, but is there something more to understand than it just being a type of journal and method to secure a bit of extra funding for current/future endeavors?
Yeah, it's just a paid newsletter/blog. Looks like demos and stuff are behind the paywall and general blog posts (like his thoughts on David Lynch) are free.
The bassist from the band Lit said one of his dream collaborations would be with TGUK. Haha random! Cool shoutout though.
so have they ever commented on them threatening to sue the early november for the "I don't want you to love me anymore" line in their song Baby Blue? I remember Jeff from TEN telling me this a long time ago after a show. I believe they settled, but yeah, I always thought that was dickish
i thought it was the label that tried to sue them. i remember reading that one of them tried to talk to matt about it once and he had no idea
Jeez. I know Drive-Thru & Vagrant had their problems (over Senses Fail from what I can recall) but I loved both bands and loved that they gave a shout out to them. Weird how Ace did sign to Vagrant at some point too. It seems so petty in retrospect
I think by now they settled it a really long time ago. Matt Pryor and Ace Enders toured together and here is a video of them performing together back in 2012
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I definitely remember hearing on a podcast or something how they wish they had legal clearance for that, which was supposedly done by word only, as they supposedly lost a lot of revenue from Baby Blue because of that. It's only been like a decade for me now understanding how big TGUK were in America - to me when I first heard about it, it was so bizzare, as I actually thought those bands were more like peers (or I mean, at leat quite similar in size), I had no cultural reference for sure
I would say the career trajectory was petty similar, but just 5 years apart. Which nowadays doesn't seem SO far apart, but that was a lifetime in music years (especially in the 90s/00s). TGUK gets more recognition as they were at the forefront of the 2nd wave emo of the late 90s.
5 years of quite a big difference in the market, it seems - definitely more records sold, magazine covers, tv shows features etc., it's not like TGUK were blink-182-famous, but from what I've learned (even solely from that Vagrant podcast Matt hosted) they kind of pushed the envolope quite hard for that whole scene
