"The Backseat" is THE Gaslight song. I'm going to be very mad at all of you if it loses to something that's not even upper half of American Slang. And I've been championing AS songs in this thread! I hope "Mae" wins. I love "Meet Me By the River's Edge," but "Mae" is one of the songs in their catalog that feels totally singular and unique to me.

I've heard stories that Gaslight wanted Mae to be the opening song off Handwritten but got talked out of it. Definitely one of the highlights off the album.
I think it works better later in the album, so I'm kind of glad things went the way they did. It was a pretty cool live opener, though.
One thing I've learned from this thread is that I like American Slang waaaaaaay less than the average Gaslight fan.

I love it. That album has always felt to me like a journey from dusk to last call at the bar. Those are the late, late night songs.
