My friend once said if I die that '59 Sound would be the song they would listen to that would crush them, so yeah I think it's pretty sad haha
My buddy from high school did die on a Saturday night so that line has always resonated with me. But in regards to Dark Places" when you pair it with "The Backseat" and Brian's divorce it really does hit you hard. Same with Get Hurt and the "maybe you needed a change..." part
I think "Cowgirls" is the weakest track on T59S but I hardly ever skip over it. Whereas with "Red in the Morning" "The Queen of Lower Chelsea" "Too Much Blood" and "Stray Paper" I'll skip over those almost every time.
That makes for an interesting side discussion I don't think we've had before. Weakest track off each album? My votes would be: Red In the Morning Casanova Baby (but hard to pick since none are bad) We Did It When We Were Young Teenage Rebellion (if B-Sides don't count, I'll go with Desire) Stray Paper But to be fair I wouldn't skip ANY of these if listening to the albums.
Here's Looking at You Kid was gonna be my vote for discussion's sake. A letter to former lovers whose doubts he'd proven true. Heartbreaking stuff. But Dark Places might beat it for me/
If you never let me go, I will never let you down All of the things that I tried to explain, how something inside of me started to break. We were living proof, one by one we drifted away.
Said it a million times - For a band that has made four albums with a theme of driving as catharsis, the opening like to Dark Places is a fucking killer.
Red At Night I guess. Don't really have a least favorite on SoS Cowgirls Old Haunts Too Much Blood Ain't That A Shame Too Much Blood is the only one of these I'd actually dislike though
Old Haunts is my 2nd to least favorite on American Slang only because the vocal delivery irked me, but with The Queen of Lower Chelsea, the song never did much for me lyrically and musically, except for the little intro riff.
That's really sad. Sorry to hear that. Genuinely don't think I could pick a least favorite from American Slang. "Here's Look at You Kid" is just so demoralizing. It's for those nights when you just kind of feel worthless and can't do anything to change it. "Dark Places" is about grasping at straws to change how things worked out and failing. Both are heartbreaking for different reasons.
It probably won't matter anyway. Surprised, though. I really did not think "Cowgirls" stood a chance.
I like the intro riff and the "Where thy die, I shall die, there they shall bury me" bit in the outro Where as Old Haunts is just boring with nothing to set it apart from the rest of the album or their catalog
Red in the Morning Casanova Queen of Lower Chelsea Desire Stray Paper I skip RITM, Desire, & Stray Paper regularly
Counterpoint: "Old Haunts" is lyrically the best song on American Slang, and a perfect distillation of that album's themes.
And with the window down, I hear you're tired now You borrowed everything and wore all your old welcomes out I love the lyrics to Old Haunts
