Can we just talk about the b-sides this band churns out? Imagine an LP of 1. Have Mercy 2. Blue Dahlia 3. Mama's Boys 4. Teenage Rebellion 5. Sweet Morphine 6. Halloween 7. Misery 8. She Loves You Like, that's a better record than the best record of some of my other favorite bands. Unreal.
I do certainly enjoy all those b-sides with the exception of Mama's Boy and Sweet Morphine, but for example I don't need the sluggishness of Misery on an album. I like to seek that out on its own. And I love that track.
P sure 59 Sound is in the lead now. People better right this shit or else I'm gonna @ every fucker in here.
Once Upon a Time is one of my favorite TGA songs too and I always forget it's a cover. Was so good to see that live a few years back.
She Loves You (this is in their top five for me) Stray Paper Teenage Rebellion The Backseat The Diamond Street Church Choir That was painful.
Stay Lucky. I love the ending to this song, "If you're anywhere in Manhattan in the next eight days or so, let me know. Speak soon. Stay lucky." Stay Vicious. Purely as I know it better. Teenage Rebellion. Again, I just know it better. The Backseat. This took me 10 minutes but I basically flipped a coin. The Diamond Street Church Choir. I really love this song. There's something about it that like all of The Gaslight Anthem's best songs in that it immediately transports you to a different place and time, automatically nostalgic.
She Loves You better not lose. Top 5 Gaslight song in my book and their best ballad ever - that chorus....... She Loves You Stay Vicious (painful.......don't like this song and feel it's the most out-of-place, non-Gaslighty song they have......but it's still better than Stray Paper, which is the most Gaslight-By-Numbers song there is, not in a good way) Sweet Morphine (easy choice) The Backseat (but really really tough) Diamond St.
Stay Lucky: I do love "She Loves You", would be such a fun drunken singalong, but like @SamLevi11 said, that ending to Stay Lucky is killer, and the guitar is such classic TGA. Stray Paper: I love parts of "Stay Vicious" (the chorus and the solo), but that main riff is kind of cheesy/annoying and I don't like Brian's vocals in the verses. But I love Brian's vocal performance in "Stray Paper" and think it's lyrically more interesting. Teenage Rebellion: Even though "Teenage Rebellion" is an acoustic track it still feels more like TGA and "Sweet Morphine" feels more like a Brian solo song. I love the vulnerable vocals in "Teenage Rebellion" and the piano adds a nice little touch. The '59 Sound: Seriously, fuck this match up, but I just have to vote for "The '59 Sound". The Diamond Street Church Choir: "Who who who does it better than we do?" 'Nuff said.
This will forever be one of my favorite Brian Fallon performances. Chuck must've been several beers deep by that point haha
I like that version much better than how the full band plays it. It's always missing something vocally, think it's too light on the harmonizing and Brian doesn't try to hit all the notes, or something. This version is pretty good.
She Loves You (7) vs. Stay Lucky (13) Stay Vicious (12) vs. Stray Paper (8) Sweet Morphine (10) vs. Teenage Rebellion (10) <---- Can't say I'm shocked how close this is. The '59 Sound (9) vs. The Backseat (11) <---- I swear if I have to be the tie-breaker for this match, I'm rage quitting this whole damn bracket. The Diamond Street Church Choir (18) vs. The Navesink Banks (2) <---- WOOF
