All 71 of The Gaslight Anthem's songs, ranked worst to best Conversation starter. My god I hated this list. Several of my top 5-10 are in his bottom 5-10.
Yeah, as different as everyone's lists would be, I think we can all agree that Wherefore Art Thou, Elvis? at No. 66 is horrifying.
Yep, that's the one that set me off, although Divorce/Diner in the bottom 10 was equally appalling to me. I love the '59 Sound as much as anyone; I just don't think it's as far superior to their other work as others seem to think. Patient Ferris Wheel in the top 10 made me laugh. Good song.....not top tier Gaslight. Too many ballads in the top 25 for me. Too many great Get Hurt songs way too low. Especially Dark Places and Selected Poems.
Plus really weird ordering of the Sink or Swim songs. Red in the Morning as one of the best songs on that album but 1930 at #56 or whatever and Divorce even lower? Come on, man. At least he had We Came To Dance correctly placed.
I think in some poll done by Gaslight fans over at Dimestore Saints a few years ago, Red in the Morning came in dead last for favorite song. It's definitely my least favorite on that album.
Mine too, although I don't think it's bad. But clearly a bottom tier Sink or Swim song. He's entitled to his opinions though.....

few takes on that list; 1) Dark Places entirely too low 2) I'm actually more OK with the top 10 than i thought I'd be, but 59' Sound as the #1 overall ehhh 3) as a big fan of the song Have Mercy, wish it would see a higher rank 4) 23rd is too low for Miles Davis & the Cool 5) Drive is a top 10 for me, would cut Patient Ferris Wheel for that
In an interview once, I remember Brian mentioning that if one song to that point of the bands history encapsulated the bands sound it was The '59 Sound. I wouldn't disagree with that. I mean how can you when it's coming from Brian. Also, I get ranking albums, songs on albums, top songs, and stuff. Ranking worst songs, and having all cover songs be considered worst songs is weird. Gaslight has a lot of great songs that have very different vibes. Hope they do another record.
I'm ok with ranking cover songs alongside original material if they are recorded versions. I think there are a lot of songs that are sneaky covers and that are included on albums so it just seems easier and more consistent to me.
We'll all the covers are near the bottom, and these songs are famous songs played really well by the band. To me personally, it's hard to start there and take the rest of the list too seriously.
Also, their version of "You Got Lucky" is straight fire and might be better than the original. If we're ranking it, it's at least mid-discography.
Including covers makes no sense. Yes, a covers album and an acoustic album would both be highly welcomed.
Yeah, I'm team "better than the original" on that one. But it's probably the only time I'll say that about a Petty cover haha. Although, Drive-By Truckers' take on "Rebels" might be up there too...
Brian Fallon has produced and played guitar on all tracks on the new record by Matthew Ryan. It's out today and highly recommend! Hustle Up Starlings, by Matthew Ryan Greetings from Germany!
