Well in this thread there is a lot of love. And people who bought the record aren’t needing to stream it. I’ve listened to it hundreds and hundreds of times, and those listens don’t get calculated in any public form. And I’m sure Get Hurt was probably downloaded a whole lot too. Maybe it’s just one of those “their lowest numbers”, but not low overall.

I don’t remember them touring this album as much either. Could be wrong.

I definitely remember lots of people coming into the Get Hurt thread for the specific purpose of shitting on that album. I gave it a relatively decent review, if I recall correctly. It’s never been my favorite, but I also never disliked it. Hard to hate an album with “Get Hurt” or “Dark Places” on it. I definitely remember calling bullshit when that Pitchfork review ran.

My case was probably different....I tried to listen to Gaslight couple times before because of friends recommendations but they never clicked with me until I saw them play with Against Me! On tour for Get Hurt....and Get Hurt was the first album that got me after this show. Then whole discography clicked with me as I was going through some really bad years and American Slang became so important for me that I got AS tattoo....So if nothing else Get Hurt got them one more diehard fan...ME!!haha

Also say whatever you want but I always thought that upside down heart was amazing idea for album titled Get Hurt...I've never looked at it as on cartoon butt or whatever

Get Hurt isn't perfect by any means, but it has some jams. Dark Places is in the running for my favorite Fallon song. The backlash wouldn't have been nearly as bad if it had been a more concise/cohesive album and I think a lot of people have better opinions of it now, in hindsight.

I seem to remember both professional reviews and people on here being very rough on Get Hurt on release. I would probably say it is their most uneven album, but it has some absolutely amazing songs on it. To me it speaks as a testament both to their strength as a group and to Brian's strength as a songwriter that the album that is arguably called their 'worst' album by so many people has multipl songs on it that you hear lost of people reference as their absolute favorite Gaslight/BF song.

If I could make my own Get Hurt tracklist of 12 songs from the 16 on the deluxe (I would personally cut Stay Vicious, Stray Paper, Ain't That A Shame, and Halloween), I think the remaining 12 songs, while not super cohesive as an actual album, are just as strong a set of 12 as those on Painkillers or Sleepwalkers, both of which are remarkably great albums.

    Just my 2 cents.

I know that's a minority opinion, but I also think Sweet Morphine, Mama's Boys, Red Violins, Have Mercy, and especially Selected Poems are much stronger songs than others seem to think.

And I agree with the poster above, Dark Places is unreal. Top 5 all time BF song for sure.

  8. Red Violins, Selected Poems, and Ain't That a Shame are three of Fallon's weakest and most boring songs.

Yep, have heard this rhetoric before, just don't agree with it so to each his/her own. Selected Poems is incredible and Red Violins is so underrated.

STRAY PAPER, now that's a boring BF song, to me.

  11. Just feels generic and like one of the songs he refers to when he said he released unfinished songs.

I will also defend Stray Paper forever because

    1. It is a prototypical Fallon song
    2. He yells and every song where Fallon yells is automatically good.

for all we know, Brian doesn't need to be "convinced" to make a new Gaslight record. all press since Get Hurt has made one thing abundantly clear: the pressure to create for the sake of satisfying a demand really, really got to them. to say "we will make music again one day" is to create that demand. it's shooting their favorite version of the creative process in the foot. look at all the press Brian has done in support of the '59 gigs: in seemingly every piece he stresses this album was so good because it was the last time they were able to do what they love for the sake of loving it.

for all we know they've got a handful of demos, or already have the plans to get in the studio next year, have internally decided to never release another song, or haven't even discussed it at all. any of those are equally plausible. i think Gaslight, in whatever form they take, will do it on their terms and only say a word about it when they're good and ready.

  13. Fallon's released eight great records in a decade. I'm perfectly satisfied with that discography haha. I hope we hear more but I also would rather hear nothing than hear something they forced themselves to do.

Selected Poems, Underneath the Ground, and the b-sides are all essential Gaslight to me. i feel like the GH b-side argument happens every couple months in here... but if those were an EP, it would be at the top of their work for me.

  15. Have Mercy and Sweet Morphine are the only ones I like off Get Hurt. But Blue Dahlia is a top-tier Gaslight song.

Wrecked 'em? Damn near killed 'em!

I feel like I'm the only person here that digs "Ain't That a Shame". "Stray Paper" and "Red Violins" are the worst songs on the album imo, although I give "Red Violins" an edge because the drum pattern in the beginning when the snare kicks in and how it works with the vocal melody is pretty cool. Other than those 2, I love Get Hurt. Will never quite understand how viciously maligned it was.

So long as it's the original version of "Halloween" then I totally agree

Ain’t That a Shame is bad, Selected Poems isn’t great, and Red Violins is just okay but probably my favorite of those three

i think Selected Poems has an argument for the most "stadium" song Gaslight ever wrote. up there with Biloxi in terms of just huge rock songs for me.

I just think it's funny how people act like it was absolutely destroyed by critics, but it still has a 62 on Metacritic. Maybe compared to their other stuff it's a significant dip, but it could have been way worse.
