3 shows in a small town in Jersey. One show at a tiny venue and an over-priced festival in NYC. Makes total sense. NYC always gets the good tours, but they get one date, the same number as Cleveland/Pittsburgh/Omaha/etc. Tiny cities.
I love all of them but American Slang felt like them trying to do a follow-up to The '59 Sound whereas Handwritten is them saying fuck it we'll be who we are. I also just love the "aesthetic" of Sink or Swim and it has some of their best one-liners
Would love to see them at Stone Pony again because when I did in 2013 it was unanimously considered one of their weakest shows, haha.
Man, i’ve been waiting for this article to happen since they started this feature. If I had to guess how he’d rank them I would have predicted 59, handwritten, slang, sink or swim, get hurt. Just a little off lol
These shows are selling out in seconds and this buzz and hype is infectious and gaining ground everywhere. I just wish it was enough to convince them to make music again. I just feel like they’re so terrified to make “another bad album” as they think it could ruin their ridiculously good discography. Which is so sad!
I agree with this take, and I think it's odd because: 1) Brian doesn't write bad songs, period. 2) Get Hurt was great - they listened to all the wrong people. The loudest voices are not always the right voices. I hate hate hate the rhetoric that this was a "bad album" and always will. If that's a bad album, give me a few more BAD ALBUMS please.
