I don't think it's their best work, but if they made Handwritten every three years for the rest of their career I'd be fine.
Yeah, I can't trade Teenage Rebellion for anything on the album. I can do Blue Dahlia for Desire, although I think Desire is fine too. I get how some don't like Too Much Blood (although I do), it's a bit different for them. That's how I feel about Stay Vicious, that's the album track I always want gone (changing albums obviously).
Feel the same way. It's a real shame because I think the album is pretty good, it's just hard for me to connect with
"Blue Dahlia" absolutely should have made the album, but "Teenage Rebellion" sits nicely with some of the other non-album tracks from that period, like "Hold You Up" & "Misery" - awesome songs but not necessarily a fit for that album
Brian Fallon from 2008 to 2012 is really one of my favorite runs an artist has ever had. Four classics.
I've been setlist watching, and they do a pretty good job of mixing it up with all their material at this point, but does anyone know why they never seem to mix in Bring It On, Boxer, or Stay Lucky? Arguably I like those more than the ones they play off Slang......or at least "as much as"
During that window of time, he also wanted to collaborate on an album with Chuck Ragan but the scheduling didn't work out, if I remember correctly. I always wonder what that would've sounded like. Anyway, Brain was on a roll in that era.
Brian has outright said he’ll “never” play Bring It On again. Not totally sure why. Stay Lucky is rare, but it gets played every so often. Boxer hasn’t been played since like, a few shows in 2015. I think even then it was that stripped down version from the B-Sides album. I’ve only seen it live once, around that time. The other outlier from American Slang is We Did It When We Were Young, don’t think that one has been touched since the American Slang cycle. I remember an old interview with someone in the band where they mentioned there were a few songs on a “Do Not Play” list. Always just assumed Bring It On and WDIWWWY were the top two, haha.
I'm not a big fan of WDIWWWY, especially compared to other "slower" songs in the catalogue that I prefer........but man I always loved Boxer and Bring It On. Strange.
I'd MUCH rather hear She Loves You than WDIWWWY, even though I don't think they ever quite nail it vocally live. She Loves You is top tier Gaslight for me. That chorus!
I actually just went to check out the stats of She Loves You after commenting in here, they don’t really play that anymore either! Felt like 2013-2015 there was a really good chance you’d see it. Love that song.
Not explicitly. I feel like I remember him mentioning the perspective of the song was something he was never totally comfortable with, because it was based on people he knew? I might be conflating something in my head, though. There’s a video of me trying to get him to play it with a sign and failing at least, haha.
This setlist, where I got personal favorites She Loves You, Dark Places, and Divorce all in one show - was one of my favorites. Also not sure how many shows got Sweet Morphine, Mama's Boys, and Have Mercy all in one show either (admittedly it was the Get Hurt tour - I just don't recall Morphine and Mama's being played very often) Would love to see Dark Places get added back into the set. The Gaslight Anthem Setlist at House of Blues, Dallas
I love Stay Lucky wish they played it more When I saw them on the Slang run, they played every song off the album except that one lol
i want you to know that i still think of this post now every single time i listen to The Weatherman, like i am right this moment lol
