I write for a local alt-weekly and my most recent piece was about the Gaslight song "Autumn." here's a shameless plug to my article for anyone curious. for me this album is still such a breeze to listen to from start to finish. cheers to two years of History Books.
I think Empires and Preludes are a tier down from the rest of the album. I really enjoy I Live in the Room Above Her, it’s a spooky lil song
Preludes is in the top 5 prettiest songs they’ve ever written sonically, and lyrically its some of Brian’s best work
It's so nice that this is the only Gaslight album I want to listen to. They made something vital in a pretty stacked discography that I already love.
It really is what I wanted from Gaslight at this stage in my life and at this point in their career. Admittedly, I’m still not too crazy about Little Fires (sorry), but man those first 5 songs are excellent.
Episode 369- Brian Fallon (singer/songwriter- Gaslight Anthem) — One Life One Chance with Toby Morse — Overcast
This OLOC pod is unreal. Toby isn’t a particularly gifted interviewer in terms of cadence and guiding a conversation, but people have so much respect for him and he’s so genuine they come and spill their guts. So much lore and storytelling. Also so funny. I audibly laughed when he confessed that stadium arcadium is his favorite Chilli Pepper’s album and his gamer tag is “Addicted 2 Da Shindig”
Love Brian as a songwriter and love gaslight but he is a pretty bad podcast guest and has largely bad taste in music
On a huge Gaslight kick since the pod. I really like the songwriting on History Books. Initially the mix was so rough I kind of panned it, but this record is killer. Can’t recommend the pod enough. So many good stories and BTS.
I haven’t checked the remix out yet. I am digging the album so much though. Re: Oh wow found it on Spotify. This is rad. Sounds like classic Gaslight. It’s cool there are both available. Going to be listening to this on repeat for the near future.
I have mixed feelings on the remix tbh. Some songs sound better while others lose something in it. The original mix on the vinyl sounds lovely though!
Yeah agreed, I think basically the slower songs sound better on the original mix and particularly history books and positive charge sound better on the remix. Spider Bites definitely has more punch on the original mix. So it's cool to have both!
"History Books" the song is the one song for me where I absolutely hear a huge difference, with the remix being a major improvement, particularly in Brian Fallon's vocals. His vocals were pretty tough for me to hear in the original mix, and the fact that Bruce Springsteen sounds so clear and pristine makes it all the more jarring. That, and the way they trade off vocals in the same song. Otherwise I'm able to hear some differences in some of the other songs but it's never to the point where I can definitively say that I prefer one mix to the other. Album is absolutely killer in either form though.
"Positive Charge" sounds 300x better on the remix. That one really jumps out at me, because it's such a big, punchy, powerful song that sounds so limp and dull in the original mix. I still get pumped up when I hear the remix of that song, because I listened to it so many times in the initial mix wishing it sounded better.
Prefer all the remixed versions and it's not particularly close. Original version kinda sounded like shit to my ears.
