I'm not actually surprised, in a weird way. Not that I know anything about him other than one YouTube video I saw.
I’ve watched one video but my expertise based off of that would be Don’t bother. Go enjoy Listener instead
If someone was going to subject themselves to that “music” it might as well be Listener. I’ve heard one Hobo song and it was probably the worst thing I’ve ever heard.
I jokingly said in the comments of a Hobo Johnson video "What Front Bottoms song is this?" I didn't fucking mean it so literally.
Never heard of Hobo Johnson before this thread so I went to give them a listen expecting something really shit, but I didn't completely hate him. Lyrics seem juvenile and he needs to stick to the spoken word instead of the white guy rap, but I can see something potentially interesting coming from him at some point in the future. Dude's kind of in his own lane (though you can see his influences pretty clearly) so you need to respect that at least. I can definitely see the through line to TFB though, not sure why people are surprised at him opening for them. Edit: listened to more stuff and not feeling his more rap stuff, but I can actually get behind this one:
i think you're all taking HJ waaaaay too seriously. It's clearly pretty tongue in cheek and just meant to be fun. Not my kind of thing but I see why people would enjoy it. I do think Romeo & Juliet is a cool track though.
I listened to his album on Spotify a few weeks ago and liked half of it. He is what he is but I didn’t hate any of his stuff.
idk, the "awkward white guy who is v nice but can't get girls but is so nice" genre is pretty densely populated. maybe there's more to him than that but the NPR submission gives me the douche willies
all i know is that i haven't listened to him but i've seen a billion random people on my fb post about him, so i assumed it was just a meme or something lol
