I'm curious if Netflix will push its bigger Oscar players like Mank and The Trial of the Chicago 7 to next fall OR will just release them all and it will be the Netflix Oscars.

The Oscars reject that idea and best picture goes to Bad Boys for Life.

The way we're going there's a chance that movies like First Cow and Never Rarely Sometimes Always are legitimate best picture contenders. Which would be kind of awesome.

The Academy has already relaxed its rules for this year such that VOD and streaming-only releases are eligible. So I imagine that Netflix will still drop its awards bait movies during the usual time.

Yeah but now they don’t also have to be in theaters for two weeks or whatever the fuck stupid rule it is lol

Also yeah I agree, I think that’s probably a safe bet.

    Changed the thread title :(

I've seen some places say it might get set for May but nothing trustworthy enough that I'd post it here.

Objectively speaking I think TGBH is his best. My sentimental favorite is Rushmore.

TGBH is a tour de force. all his strengths on full display and it comes together so perfectly despite having so many moving pieces. I expect / hope that this will be similar.

Probably the tenenbaums for me. I also really enjoy Darjeeling although I know that’s not a popular opinion.

The first three (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, and The Royal Tenenbaums) stand above the rest. They have genuine emotional cores woven into his eccentric style, whereas the films after that felt more hollow. They do have their emotional moments, but they feel artificial in comparison to moments like when Max Fischer admits that his father is a barber to Bloom, or Bloom's standing ovation to the Vietnam play, or Margot's pain after Richie tries to commit suicide.

Life Aquatic is soooo good. I still get dumbfounded when people tell me they don’t like it.

Owen Wilson is credited as a co-writer on his first three films. I wonder how much that has to do with the tonal shift.
