I can see why people don't like those two songs. they put the 'flat' in flatliners. It'll Hurt picks things back up. That said only on fourth listen so a long time left for them to win me over
I don't see how either of them are flat, they're both catchy songs. Rat King is the worst song on the album but I still enjoy it, in some ways in reminds me of Dead Language.
Rat King rocks, Big Strum I would say is probably my least favorite but I don't mind it Gets better each listen though. Performative Hours is such a good opener
Nice lil interview about the album: https://newnoisemagazine.com/interv...dishes-on-reflective-upcoming-album-new-ruin/ And a track breakdown: The Flatliners break down every track on new album 'New Ruin'
I like Chris gnarly vocals. Kind of neat to have a Flatliners record and a Hot Water Music album to come out months apart too. Dying Sun is a really cool song. Great way to close out the album.
Coming here and not seeing any love for Under a Dying Sun was disappointing. One of my favorite things they've done.
Look in the post above. I specifically mention Dying Sun. I’m with you that’s it easily on of my favourite things they’ve ever done (along with a roaring cover of Ahead By A Century originally by The Tragically Hip).
Ha! Looks like I need to read instead of skim! Haven't heard that cover yet so thanks for letting me know to check it out.
All good. I was surprised too. Before you listen to the cover listen to the original version if you haven’t heard it before. Just shows how The Flatliners paid a good trip to The Hip yet found a way to make that song rip and have new life.
Was really hoping for a big comeback from "Inviting Light." Wasn't blown away by this, but it's growing on me. I'm still not super into the first half of this album, but everything from "Oath" on is pretty strong.
My only complaint about this is that it feels too short. I start off rocking out to "Performative Hours" and before I know it I'm hitting the end of "Under a Dying Sun" and ready to start it again.
I'm coming around on this whole album, even tracks 3 and 4. Oath, Recoil, and Souvenir are so fucking good, some of their best material ever. Thank you to some of you in this thread for bullying me into giving it a fair shot.
This record has some really catchy cool songs. Liking it more and more each listen. Pretty cool Chris had this and a HWM release the same year.
will give it another go but this album did nothing for me on release and subsequent weeks, and not confident it will now either. edit - really enjoying that instrumental though
The single didn’t hit for me, but the closer Under A Dying Sun is awesome and did instantly. As I gave the album a few more listens, I found myself just getting the catchy gnarly or wobbly crooney parts stuck in my head. Took me a little while, but I’ve been rotating this album through regularly for the past two months (and it plays right after the Hot Water Music album on my fall playlist).
Well I’ve really come to enjoy it. There is a pop sensibility on this record that that they infused on here. I also had no expectations going in. Still think the closer is gonna be one of my most listened to songs this year.
