A few suggestions Priory of the Orange Tree - an entire series basically in one book. Incredible. A prequel was released recently and it's also fantastic. Adrian Tchaikovsky's work - Children of Time is utterly brilliant sci fi, that sort of plays like a fantasy hybrid. His 10 book fantasy series Shadows of the Apt is also fucking great, with an excellent and original conceit. You literally can't go wrong with his books and they are consistently on sale on amazon Kindle. The Dandelion Dynasty - Excellent, Eastern inspired, epic as all holy fuck. I felt like I was holding my breath through the entire last books 1,000+ pages. The Traitor Beru Cormorant - A slow burn, high finance, but extremely captivating and rewarding of the patient. The best fantasy book I've read that looks at social justice issues. It's on hiatus for now because it's very taxing mentally on the author, but you have 3 excellent books. Also the most original magic system I've ever seen. The Long Price Quartet - Another slow burn thats deeply rewarding. You can get this entire 4 book series in on reasonably priced collection on Amazon. It's written by one half of the Expanse team. It's beautiful. I don't know if anyone in here has taken me up on this rec yet, but I'm gonna keep trying! And then there's Malazan. That's a whole other discussion. My personal favorite series of all time, but it's a commitment.
Thank you for this! I have heard of the first two series (tho didn’t know priory was a series just thought it was one book) but not the rest. I’ll add these to my queue.
The Fall is the next TBB for Cahill and can’t wait to show the pictures!! If you haven’t already for TBB edition in your hands then ugh, it’s amazing. I’ve given Cahill a lot of praise here so I’m glad to see I’m not the only one reading him haha
Priory always has been a just one book, and for a long time I was calling it my favorite solo fantasy book. But this year she released a prequel, so I guess it's now officially a series. I noticed they gave it a subtitle (The Roots of Chaos) so it makes me hopeful we'll get more.
Anyone read the Cradle series? The final book in the series just came out and I think I’m finally going to dive into them after owning the first few for awhile now. I’ve been having trouble getting into a reading mindset this last year or so, so hopefully this is the series to finally suck me in again
I've got Of Blood and Fire in my Audible library. Probably going to be a post-Malazan thing. Finished Memories of Ice yesterday.
These are great. Obviously not super challenging, but incredibly fun and you can breeze through a book in a couple days. Edit: also didn't know the last one was out. Thanks for that.
Not to keep going back to the suneater, but I just finished Kingdoms of Death and wow... i didnt enjoy it as much as Demon In White, as the story seemed a lot smaller in scale and focused in this book (vs the behometh of ideas and places and plot points that was the last entry), but still an excellent addition. There was still a lot of plot packed into this one, and some great lore reveals and movement on the over arching plot of the cielcin, the quiet and the watchers, but it didnt jump around, and feel like multiple genres deftly stiched together like the last 2 entries. Fair warning - This book has been described as dark by reviewers and the author alike, and you best believe it. Total commitment to that theme in this novel. Interested now to say where Ashes of man goes, especially since it was originally one book - though i was pleasantly surprised that this felt like a complete novel, and not 1 that had been chopped in half. Not sure if I'm going right into the next, or if I will read another book in between.
I've been very casual with my reading the past year or so and I want to get a lot done this summer. No idea where I'm starting.
That's how I was and it took a lot of false starts to get going again. I think I've learned not to be afraid to put something down and come back to it, and read something else, if I'm just struggling with it. I've enjoyed plenty of books on re attempts that I struggled with prior. If I ever hit what I think is a reading lull again, I'll switch gears a lot quicker.
I just wrapped up all of the Cosmere books and now im kind of in a slump because i dont know what to read next.
Those books are lots of fun. I've only read the first two so far, but I've got the rest waiting for me.
