I think I need to start doing the ebook thing for financial reasons. I like having a physical copy of the book, and I have been using my local library system in recent years, but I have a ton of books that I want to read that are a bit less mainstream and they don't actually have a copy of them anywhere in my library system, and I can't afford to buy them all physically

I will always and forever prefer physical to digital book-wise. I love my shelf of old mass market paperbacks. That being said, it really is an incredibly cost effective way to read books that are just too much $$ wise. There are like 10+ Malazan novels I haven't read because the physical versions are like $25 and up just for the paperback version.

And that's not even mentioning the convenience of travel. I might sneak in a paperback or two but it's also nice to have my entire digital library available.

I occasionally purchase physical books, but I’m almost entirely digital now. I primarily get everything from Amazon sales. Amazon sends me a daily email with book sales, and I wait until I see a book I’ve been wanting to read. If I’m really eager to read something, I’ll buy it even if it’s not on sale. However, I have hundreds of unread books on my Kindle, so I have plenty of other options to choose from.

Most of the books I buy are around €10, which is what ebooks cost too here, so I can’t really justify the costs of an ereader. Also frankly I am worried about even more screens.

I keep finding the books I'm looking for on Amazon as those large soft covers, and they usually cost almost as much as a hardcover, which makes me want to spend that little bit more and get the actual hardcover even though I don't have money to be buying it at all in the first place haha

  6. Physical books all the way. It annoys me something that is essentially a PDF is not significantly cheaper than a physical book.

I’m mostly digital now due to Libby and kindle unlimited but still love buying used books whenever I can

  8. I just don't like the experience of reading digitally at all, and I love physical books too much to ever give them up. I also hardly ever buy new unless I have a gift card or there's something I really don't want to wait on.

For what it’s worth, there (should be) a lot more that goes into an ebook formatting-wise than just copying the PDF over. There’s definitely some labor involved.

that said though, your point stands, ebooks should be way cheaper than print books in general.

I do love physical copies so much, both special editions and just general MMPs and everything. But I’ve also pivoted to the library and ebooks for books I want to investigate, and I reserve physical copies for ones I know I want to own.

Yeah, part of my move to ebooks is i just have limited space. like 6 boxes of books and two full bookshelves already. and that's after downsizing and donating like 6 boxes to a library before i moved states lol.

so I tend to opt for digital unless it's an author I love or used (especially older books not likely to be digitally available).

I feel like these super ambitious plans usually fizzle out, but I'd be really excited about an animated WoT show and/or movies

animation or CGI animation to me just seems like the perfect medium for fantasy adaptations with how heavy they are with special effects & CGI & everything already

  15. Agree on animation being great. I know a lot of people have this mental block when it comes to animation vs live action which is unfortunate.

I think it was the Peter Jackson Hobbit movies, particularly when it got to the stuff at Erebor, Battle of Five Armies & Dain, where there was just so much CGI & actors being composited in, that I just couldn't help but feel like it would have been great to use all of those same resources and just go fully CGI / animated

also, I was a pretty big fan of the WoT show, and cut them a lot of slack for their shortcomings, but I remember absolutely loving the short, animated bonus material things they released ahead of time to get viewers familiar with the world

    this is an outrage Moderator

Someone speculated they cut WoT's fourth season because they needed money to buy Melania's doc. Another reason on the list, haha.

That third season finally felt like they were "getting it."

biggest bummer about the WoT Amazon stuff was no more Rosamund audiobooks. She just absolutely shits all over Kramer/Reading and deserved to get the full series.

I couldn’t really get into the WoT Amazon show. Felt pretty cheesy, like a CW show or something of that caliber.

  21. It’s also an issue when you have 14 books to cover, how do you tell the whole story decently when in reality you probably have to do it over 5-6 seasons where you’re getting 8 episodes a season.

I didn’t continue after season 1 myself. Thought the acting wasn’t great.

Several people have said this, but I just don't get it. I think (and maybe I'm off base with your opinion?) that it's just an easy insult to throw out when the story is centered around young characters. Now... the 1st season changed too much from the books they couldn't recover from, and the CGI was at times atrocious so I can get being turned off, but the 2nd and 3rd season were great. And it's Wheel of Time. The cheese is part of the series. I mean, half the classic lines in fantasy are cheesy without the context or just letting yourself get into the story.

I'd like to give them a go but I personally really like Kramer and Reading both as a team for WOT and Stormlight and I've liked Kramer's other readings too.

I'd like to be contrarian on this and say that in the end I'm paying an artist for their art. If the ebook replaces print in a lot of sales, how much cheaper should it be and then at what point does the author become undervalued and under compensated? I am fine paying what's considered 'too much' if the author is receiving adequate compensation. I don't know if that makes sense? Like I get the thought that an ebook should be 'dirt cheap' but the content is worth paying a premium and rewarding the artist for?

it's definitely an issue, just like it is for anyone adapting any of these huge works of fantasy to a different medium, but even as someone who falls on the side of liking the show more than not, I disagree with a lot of the creative choices that they made with this version, things like aging the characters up and having them get down in the lobby (?) of The Winespring Inn

I’ve read WoT and love the series. I just don’t think the adaptation was a very good one. Maybe cheesy is the wrong word. I just felt like the production, acting, CGI, etc. all came together in a package that felt like I was watching a CW show, or when MTV tried to do an adaptation of The Shannara Chronicles if anyone remembers that.

I remember my biggest complaint with the premiere (and really the entire first season) was how rushed it felt, but I ended up cutting them some slack on that because I read that the showrunner fought Amazon like hell to try to get some extra time for the first episode but they got shot down
