Yeah it’s been a minute since I read it, but I also felt like there was not a lot of dialogue, which I tend to enjoy. And the writing, while not bad, was not really anything special either IMO. I did find it interesting and funny, but I also got tired of reading about power stats and what not. Like cool you found some new item, but I don’t really care if it boosted some stat from 40 to 50 haha.
It’s very heavy on the litrpg stats for the first couple books, and then pulls that back quite a bit. There’s a lot more dialogue/in-game “chat” as it progresses. One thing about Donut, she doesn’t shut up haha.
I got my first Book of the Month box. Cant wait to start this next. I’ve been on a stand-alone book run lately. I haven’t read Jade City yet, but this sounds good.
Have been wanting to visit my local used store but feel my to-read pile is too big. didn’t stop me ordering this anyway earlier in the week:
Maybe a hot take but I do not like how the two towers is structured. I remember hating the split of the book when I read it 20 some years ago and I still do. And the treebeard chapter is 2 hrs long and has been a bit of a slog listening lol. Still great but wish it was structured differently.
these are my favorite books of all time, and I can agree, I have never loved how the stories end up divided so distinctly either. partially why I always end up feeling like Fellowship is my favorite.
Post-Parade of Horribles thoughts: 1. I hated not seeing even an interlude with Katia. I’m worried she didn’t show up for some horrific reason. 2. Sexy Scolopendra is HILARIOUS. But when he summoned Scolopendra in the arena, I was quite shook. 3. The “Take On Me” chapter was insanely perfect. 4. Are they going to all be gods in the ascendancy battle? That’s the vibe I’m getting. 5. “Remember: this is a tragedy.” Fuck you, Matt, you better give them a happy ending. 6. Piglet is a twink.
I don’t think it will be a happy ending for Carl or possibly donut. It’s explicitly stated that the story is a tragedy and with Carl being a primal / donut a princess it’s possible one of them (or both) will have to make a sacrifice.
Big yes, Unstoppable, Arkham Horror, Final Girl, Marvel Champions… I haven’t grabbed Mistborn yet but am looking forward to it Unstoppable is a seriously great jumping in point so folks need to keep their eye on the DCC version
I love those vintage covers! I actually already own an omnibus version of that Faded Sun book that has all 3 volumes, but the cover is not nearly as cool
Finished Network Effect re-read. Realize I never actually read System Collapse, so two Murderbot stories to read, which is nice given there won’t be much more in all likelihood. Finished the Fever Beach audiobook and checked out two more books because my holds came in: Whidbey - mystery novel on a local island. Blood Trail - some horror story about a cult
I have three audible credits left. Any recommendations? Was thinking maybe the silmarillion since I’ve never read it.
I personally enjoy the Orconomics books by J. Zachary Pike which I believe are an Audible exclusive. They're a satire. Not everyone seems to love them, I think because they went in with a skewed viewpoint. They're more clever than funny and can be quite sad.
this looks pretty interesting. Might snag it after I am done listening to the LOTR trilogy and use it as a break before getting into the silmarilion
I was never an audiobook person but it’s nice to be able to have two books going at once between listening and reading. I listen pretty much exclusively in the car.
For sure do The Sil. Tangleweed & Waterbloom? I kid. Hyperion is great. Anything by Edgar Rice Burroughs is great in audio. Ditto Brian Lumley. The new James Islington and Bradley Beaulieu series are great in audio. John Scalzi is good. Shauna Lawless’s audiobooks are great. Also any Dragonlance books haha. Simon Vance, Ray Porter, and Joshua Saxon are some of my favorite narrators, and they’ve all done a bunch.
The Will of the Many, Lies of Locke Lamora, and The Blade Itself are all outstanding audiobooks Lions of Al-Rassan too but that might be better on the page because Kay's prose deserves actual eyeballs on it
