In other news, I finished The Tyranny of Faith and my re-read of Memories of Ice yesterday. 4 and 5 star reads, respectively. Gonna jump right into The Trials of Empire. Taking a short Malazan reprieve while I finally dive into Janny Wurts and read some indie stuff.
I made the mistake of reading Hyperion years ago and then not reading the sequel, I remember very little
Fuck ma,.Memories of Ice is GOATed. What a fucking book holy moly. It's next up on my reread and I'm so excited.
the word “possibly” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here haha. but yeah I was stunned when I found it was a minority opinion. I think all four books are incredible and make the story complete. to me it’s a little like asking which LOTR is my favorite: they all are.
No judgment obviously as I haven’t had the opportunity to read the series myself, I just always heard Endymion was a significant step down so I’m excited to see a differing opinion.
yeah I'm excited to hit the Endymions now, was really curious how they'd stack up to the originals loving how Hyperion just throws you in the deep end with a lot of terminology you don't know then immediately switches to a short story about a character who's not there for 50 pages, that's truly bold lmao
This is the hottest take in the world, but…I DNF’d Mistborn. 100 pages in, I wasn’t feeling it. It was my first time reading a book with a hard magic system and I didn’t care for the explanation of how the powers worked every time they were used. Some people like the detail, and I get that, but it felt repetitive and took away from the story. The two protagonists felt overpowered right from the start, even if the girl didn’t know her powers at first. And I didn’t realize it was a steampunk aesthetic. Not my favorite. Anyways, I started Red Rising. I’m glad I have the first book of a ton of series, since I’m kinda picky and indecisive. I’m 100 pages in and can’t put it down. Things are happening quickly and I feel like some things could be more detailed, since the chapters are short and some things go by quick that are supposed to be impactful. This is a true underground story that’s hooking me. I read somewhere comparing it to Hunger Games. Maybe it’s cause I’ve only seen the first movie, but I don’t get it. Maybe cause there’s an oppressive government…or there will be some “games” later. I’ll give Mistborn another try eventually, but I have a big list on my shelf already (Narnia, Empire of Silence, Dandelion Kingdom, Jade City maybe)
I have also tried to start Mistborn a few times and put it down and never picked it back up. I remember people saying that the first one is the roughest and they are better after that, but there are so many books that I want to read I usually end up moving on to something else. I've always thought I want to actually give the series a chance sometime though. This is a completely separate thought, but I've also learned about myself that I have a very strong preference for single POV books, especially when they are huge doorstopper type fantasy books, which seem like exactly the type of books that usually have multiple POVs. I devoured The Will of the Many in about a week, which is pretty good for me not being on vacay from work or anything, and I've started The Strength of the Few - which a lot of people here have said is even better - and I'm struggling to get into it. I think I'm on page 72 or something and I've had it for like a week. I remember whining on here a little while ago about not liking one of the POVs in Grave Empire as much as the others. I did ultimately love that book and can't wait for the next one, but I think at least part of my problem was that I prefer when things don't jump around to different perspectives, but I didn't make the connection at the time and really thought something about the storyline with the fat nobleman with the magical lover who loves/hates him was just not working for me.
the ending of the cruciform chapter in Hyperion is honestly scarier than most horror I've read (quite a lot)
pretty sure it's open to every one and it's their entire catalog. just what varying degree of sale will the title you're looking for have.
