Oh great, I'm glad it was a hit. Sounds like I need to get on with reading the rest of the series since you've outpaced me! But yeah I was just captivated by the first book. Brutal imagery without dropping too far into doing the whole grimdark-for-its-own-sake thing, and the way everything in the book is described is just so poetic and evocative, I love it. I've got Bakker's first book sitting on my shelf waiting to be read as well... Couple more recommendations — I don't know if you've read anything by Jay Kristoff, but I bet you'd like his stuff a lot; and I recently read Poul Anderson's The Broken Sword and it was one of the finest fantasy/mythology-inspired classic tales I've ever read, it rightly deserves every comparison to Tolkien and Moorcock and the other greats. I know Anderson wrote a bunch of stuff so I'm way behind the times here, but it's worth a shot if you've never read it too.
Having FINALLY finished my YA fantasy draft, I'm letting myself listen to a fantasy novel. Starting Rage of Dragons!
Loving this Rage of Dragons love but will be so disappointed if it turns out no-one else liked it like I have....
The Iliad and the Odyssey Boxed Set I just ordered this, Zeus help me. Totally should be counted as fantasy if you ask me.
I've got this rocking on Audible and I'm reading Imaginary Friend on my Kindle, both of which i'm thoroughly enjoying. I'm at the part where he has to win 10 matches and he's about to fight the giant guy
It's the only series I can think of that I quit and don't have any interest on returning to, I think I read 4 as well. Read Long Price Quartet instead, its from one of the authors and its infinitely better and you can get all 4 books in a collection pretty cheap
I mean I've enjoyed them well enough but I wouldn't say they should hop to the front of anyone's to-read list. I'd compare them to a blockbuster movie, fun and entertaining but not a lot of substance. Read the Three Body Problem instead if you're looking for some sci-fi.
I've read that one and really didn't care to ever move on to the sequels. So maybe both are off my list, haha.
I've just finished Foundryside and loved it! What an intelligent way of introducing characters and a great new setting.
Fitting that my last post here was finishing Foundryside and now I'm starting Shorefall which is out today!
Finished book 5 of Malazan! Slowly working my way through this amazing series. I didn't realize when i was first starting the series how loosely connected the story is from book to book. I figured each book would prominently feature the Bridgeburners, but now it's gone several books without even a mention of any of those characters. Not complaining, just an observation.
Read the first ICE book before Bonehunters, Knight of Knives. It's basically a novella, you can finish in one or two sittings. You'll want to know as much about Malaz Island and it's landmarks as possible before Bonehunters. Also the Bonehunters has my second favorite moment in the series, its the climax, which could be anywhere between the last 200 to the last 20 pages, I can't remember, it was a blur.
I loved Midnight Tides. It was definitely somewhat smaller in scope, which I didn't mind. And I just loved some of the characters, like Bugg and Tehol, etc. Oh man, I haven't touched any of the ICE books. It's all so confusing, the reading order and everything.
You're totally fine, Knight of Knives is the only thing you'll want to have read from ICE until after Reaper's Gale. Most of ICE's books take place in conjuction with or after the Book of the Fallens grand finale If you want a list as that's as simple as possible this is my recommendation ICE Knight of Knives Bonehunters Reapers Gale ICE Return of the Crimson Guard Toll the Hounds ICE Stonewielder Dust of Dreams ICE Orb Sceptre Throne The Crippled God ICE Blood and Bone ICE ASsail
I think I'm going to do more peaking into the world of grimdark fantasy since it's becoming clear my favorites are being labeled as such (I still think the name sounds stupid though). Reading Beyond Redemption now (since I can't get Stephen King's new book that came out today, blegh)
