The popular solo/co-op boardgame Unstoppable is getting a DCC version: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/459928/dungeon-crawler-carl-unstoppable I haven't played the original but it reviewed really well. If anything will get me into DCC, it might be this lol
my eBay order came in, and I haven't had a chance to go to the library yet, so I'm starting my first Shadowrun book -->
oh snap!!! huge fan of his, and also I was genuinely about to come on here today and ask everyone for some other cyberpunk recs! these Shadowrun books are kinda fun, but they are definitely pretty cheesy and lightweight - I'd put them on par with like The Icewind Dale trilogy by R.A. Salvatore, but I'm feeling the whole cyberpunk thing and wanted something a little more substantial
some friends recently read the new Fonda Lee Isako book. Cyberpunk assassins are so in right now haha
oh jesus I'm an idiot. I don't know why I said Kuang. Fonda Lee. APOLOGIES ITS BEEN A WEIRD DAY. I'M SORRY @FlayedManOfSF
not sure if you're a netgalley user but it's up there and I think they were approving pretty generously
I finally finished Project Hail Mary, my first book of 2026. The new baby gives me no free time and I sleep when she does. I’m always too tired to read. the book was good! I didn’t expect it to be so sciencey, even though it is science fiction. A lot of things were over explained, but I get that’s the point. The overall themes were discovery and exploration afterall. The ending was wild. I’m so curious to see how it’ll look on the big screen… specifically the alien planet!. Oh, and Rocky is GOATed.
This won't help with the "substantial" part of your request, but I've read the first two books of the Mirador trilogy by Dan Wells and really enjoyed them. They're YA cyberpunk and a lot of fun. Will be following along for other recs because I honestly don't think I've read much in the genre.
I'll definitely check those out, they sound really fun. I don't think 'substantial' was the correct word exactly, and I'm enjoying these for they they are, but they're definitely kinda like junk food
You'll probably like the Mirador books, I think! I know what you mean about the junk food comparison, and I wouldn't say these are that. I think Dan Wells is pretty underrated (easy to see why he gets overshadowed, I guess), he's a really fantastic writer and does a lot of cool stuff with plot and character.
yeah, with these, I like the setup and enjoy the hell out of the world, but the actually writing is C+ / B- level, so something kinda similar but with legitimately great writing is exactly what I'm looking for
I googled it and a bunch of the hits all list Neuromancer by William Gibson & Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson as the quintessential classics of the genre. I also found a few indie recs that my library system doesn't have but I might buy when I have a little extra money: Thrill Switch by Tim Hawken 36 Streets by T.R. Napper
I’m starting Mistborn now as my first Sanderson book because of FOMO. Let’s see if it’s worth the hype…
