I almost posted the other day that that final scene with him celebrating with his wife felt super weird but I assumed I missed something and that we were supposed to be uncomfortable with that. Guess not. Weird

 

Watched the whole show over the last two days and thought it was good but not great. Sebastian Stan is a really great actor but I think Mackie is honestly kind of spotty, although they did give him some really bad dialogue at points so it might not be his fault. Action was really good though, and the tackling of race issues felt pretty edgy for the MCU

I posted way too many tweets about this but my two main points were:
1. How hard would it have been to just say “that’s not how we’re approaching these characters and relationship but it’s cool that people care enough about these characters to explore other journeys for them”

2. I trace this back to Glee and the rise of social media, but there’s been a serious shift in fandom over the last 10 years from “I see chemistry in these two characters and I wonder what it would be like if they dated!” to “I see chemistry in these two characters and I will scream about it at the top of my lungs and if it does not become canon I have been personally wronged” and it’s incredibly bad news for all involved.

Ultimately, it’s called fandom for a reason and there needs to be a divide. Asking actors and creators about shipping and fan theories only stirs the pot and it rarely, rarely ends well for anyone on any side of the equation.

Also included this in my long ass Twitter thread but the problem with Glee is that the first time it happened, the fans were right and it actually served the story. Shifting from a one liner about Santana and Brittany fooling around to an actual coming out arc for Santana and exploring that relationship worked. Fans were right because Ryan Murphy doesn’t put any care into queer female characters, not because fans always know better. So now there’s an example of where something good actually came from it and people feel entitled. I’ve seen some serious lines crossed by fans in fandom and it’s going to cause some real damage if people don’t start paying attention and thinking critically about all of this.

 

Also should add Craig Jenkins had a great point that if Marvel actually included queer people in their universe, there’d be less heat on the characters that already exist about it. Shipping is going to happen no matter what, but I do think a large part of it in the Marvel world specifically is that there’s not anywhere for queer people to find themselves outside of one character at this point.

That guest actor thing was always a little wonky. Iirc, Pedro Pascal didn’t even get nominated for Oberyn Martell even though Diana Rigg got nominated that same season (which ended up being the season she did the least amount in too I think. Felt like she was much more active in 3 and 5-7

The crown was very enjoyable. I normally hate most English nobles stuff but it was good.
