Just watched the original and it deserves the reverence it gets - awesome movie that quote is terrible lol
Id say they’re both on par with each other…Nun is a typical Blumhouse modern horror film, nothing great…Exorcist is less of a horror movie and more of a religious thriller.
Not to pile on the dead horse, but Mark Kermode's review/rant about this film is well worth a watch. (For those not familiar, he's a UK film critic who considers the original among his favourite films ever, and they recently re-aired a documentary to celebrate the 25th anniversary. Among other things.)
Thought this was quite bad. I was on board for the first half or so. I thought the set up for the girls' disappearance worked quite well. Enough so that I was pleasantly surprised and thinking I might be in the minority. Then it all kind of fell apart. I couldn't get past the idea that Victor would spend the first third or more of the movie completely dismissing the religious/paranormal aspect of his daughter's case, completely scoffing at the mere mention of it and trying to dismiss Ann Dowd's character as a nut job, only to just be convinced in a mere instant and become ALL IN on an exorcism. It was just such a ridiculous, harsh leap to make and it made the whole thing unravel. Seems like the studio might already be pivoting and considering another soft reboot for the next two films.
This was a frustrating watch. I thought the emotional core was shockingly solid, but everything between the first 30 minutes and the last 10 is so toothless and joyless and painfully average. Hardly any effective scares, bad CG, bad ADR. You can just feel David Gordon Green tediously trying to reference the original at every turn. Ironically, if you cut Burstyn and all the stuff indebted to the original, just called the film Believer, I think audiences would have been way more receptive. But of course less folks would have cared about/seen it.
I don't know if he has the meanness in him that a great Exorcist film requires but obviously I'll still watch it, that's my dude. can't get any worse than another DGG trilogy anyway
