I think I would have enjoyed the film even if it wasn't part of the MCU because it's a pretty standalone. Aside from the Thanos references, it doesn't have many connections and no MCU characters from other films make an appearance. Take out the "emergence" happening due to the snap and that's pretty much the film with no MCU connection.
That’s not the point being made though. We are saying that it’s far more likely that more people view it more positive because it’s the MCU.
MCU or not, it’s two and a half hours of attractive people frowning their way through time without ever giving me a reason to give a shit about any of them.
Is there anyone in this thread showing that they only like it because it’s MCU? I know plenty of people who like the MCU but say they can’t get through Thor, Iron Man 2, Captain Marvel, or Ant-Man and the Wasp, so I don’t have any experience with someone blindly liking a film they think is trash just because it’s MCU-related. If a film sucks then it sucks.
I thought the movie was okay. Don’t really have a desire to watch it again. And I’m someone that has liked everything MCU. Probably the only reason I saw this in theaters is because of that.
There is a difference between “blindly liking a film” and viewing it more favorably because it’s a part of a franchise you enjoy.
I would say also that, if it weren't connected to the MCU, I probably wouldn't have gone to see it in the first place. But the lack of any real connection to the MCU in the movie had me both intrigued and also a little confused--about the future. Like I don't know where these characters fit into the MCU later on, or if it was just a way to introduce the Celestials and their motives more in depth/also introduce Dane Whitman/Also introduce Eros/etc, while the Eternals themselves might not show up very much at all. THough I imagine most of them will have some part to play in the future since they aren't limited to just fighting deviants now.
I for one absolutely would've seen it without the MCU connection. It was written and directed by Chloe Zhao. That was always the most exciting thing about it.
I totally saw it because it's Marvel. I don't think I just blindly enjoy things as I definitely consider some films worse than others, but I also think I'm probably more easygoing on things in general. The worst MCU movies to me are still relatively enjoyable and inoffensive. But that's not a fanboy thing to me, that's how I am with everything.
Rumors going around now that the ten rings could be tech related to the Eternals instead of their comic origin.
Instead of this film, I would have been more interested in a mini series about how the Eternals inspired the myths around each character. Maybe have it in the the style of Dane teaching a class with Sprite interrupting to correct him, with each episode diving into both versions of the myths - one as we know it, and one “how it really happened”
I want a mini series of Dane doing a 23 and Me to learn he’s The Sword Guy or whatever during the week where his girlfriend is revealed to be an ancient alien and his planet is going to explode giving birth.
This movie was the definition of "reach exceeding grasp." Felt like it was shot beautifully, effects were solid, actors did their best, but the script was a little too disjointed and the ending very weirdly abrupt. Not an abject failure, nor a success in many regards. Would definitely love to see how this gets folded back into the MCU over the next few years, and if it results in a reconsideration of the movie.
