I didn’t realize that Terrible People was opening for Forests today, so I guess I’m seeing them r/n. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hi all, haven't really posted much on this site, but I do like checking this thread from time to time to find new music. There seems to be a great collective knowledge here so I thought this would be a good place to ask my question. A little background first: I was really into the Top Shelf / CYLS / RFC / Tiny Engines scene of releases from around 2010 - 2014, but a lot of those bands have moved on from the sound I liked and I have trouble getting into most of the new bands a lot of people here (and elsewhere) seem to like. I'm finding myself less and less interested in music from the U.S. and have started really getting into local music from other countries. Recently I found this release by Bird Bone: which is the first album I've really wanted to listen to on repeat in a long time. They're from Russia and sing in Russian. This led me to look into other Russian emo bands, and I couldn't believe how many really good emo bands they have right now. I made a playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/71EsZQnXqABOLAsE7MFmzD to highlight some of my favorites. I want to also shout out this article by bandcamp: The Punk Scene in Yakutsk, Russia Turns Isolation Into Inspiration for introducing me to this album: Track #2 is a total banger. Any other Russian emo bands (not on my playlist) that I should check out? Or if anyone has any recommendations of playlists on Spotify (or any other place) focusing on local music for countries where English isn't the dominant language, that would be really great because outside of browsing the combination of emo and country tags on bandcamp I'm not sure how to search for this kind of thing. Thanks!
so not emo in the vein i think your looking for, but glintshake are a very angular/post-rock band from russia that absolutely SLAY. In terms of other countries, theres honestly a plethora of sick japanese emo bands that you would probably be super into from the sounds of it. I've found the easiest ways to discover those bands are either this thread or just going down deep youtube/bandcamp holes. Ill try and gather a list of all the best japanese stuff i know and get back to you. I know you also said Top Shelf isnt much of your speed anymore but in the past years they've done an amazing job of releasing/high lighting some really good international bands, so i would honestly still keep an eye on what they release.
wait...speaking of japanese emo. PENS+ ARE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YESSSSS Fuck, this is outrageously good. Their split on lauren records years ago is a fav of mine.
ok looking through my itunes quickly this is what i think is your vibe from japan Pens+ /// Our Days SUMMERMAN /// fan Falls /// Wednesday By the end of the summer /// Laughing EP Jyocho /// 美しい終末サイクル 4BROTHERS /// 4BROTHERS Humpback /// hanamuke in terms of means of discovering bands, that tends to be difficult for alot of these japanese band because they won't put their music up on streaming. Their albums can sometime be difficult to buy (have had to import/buy japanese gift cards online to buy digitally, etc). Theres a ton of stuff on youtube/bandcamp though so its a lot of manual digging. Pretty much anytime a band I love (Yr Poetry for ex) goes and tours japan, i just tend to pay attention to all the local bands that open for them and then youtube/google search for their music. It sucks that its rather involved, but tends to be the best way to find local bands killing it across the globe. hope that helps even though none of that is really useful. Im curious how @topshelfsquad goes about discovering bands from across the ocean.
I've been really out of touch for like two years, what are the cool small emo labels these days? trying to go on a deep dive
Such a classic Chatterbot is probably the one lately. Counter intuitive, lonely ghost, refresh, chillwavve, know hope, and we’re trying are all pretty good too. 6131 and honest face have been pretty consistent for a few years too
Really like and wanna reiterate We're Trying, and also mention Dadstache, Forged Artifacts, Get Better, Citrus City, Disposable America, Spirit Goth, Babe City, Community. Lauren Records is probably killing it the most consistently.
