The Spaceships album that label put out the other day is really cool too. More post-rock, but reminds me of the moodier parts of Thrice and maybe some OBrother.
My friend Daniel runs that Friend Club Records label which is cool. He's also the creator of the Midwest Emoposting Facebook group.
It was great in the beginning and first couple of years, but now it has definitely gone a bit downhill, which sucks. It's less active now too so there isn't as much discussion happening, but there are still some good posts.
anyone else feel like they're having a hard time really getting into new music? Even though I'm quarantined all day and working from home I haven't been playing a ton of music lately and feel like its been a long time since an album really hooked me where I could get really into a band/back catalog/group of artists. I dunno, anyone have recs of something you've been obsessed with lately?
I’ve actually been into a bunch of new music during this time, but I also feel like I cycle through it quicker. The last record that inspired me to actually go back into the artist’s back catalog is Johanna Warren’s Chaotic Good.
I've felt like I've had way more time to check out new music thanks to being home way more and having less obligations. Here are some recent (from June to present) albums I have enjoyed and some upcoming ones (out this Friday) I am anticipating. These aren't all "emo" records, some are adjacent, but they are all records people in here looking for new album recs would probably enjoy. Recent albums: Liza Anne - Bad Vacation Becca Mancari - The Greatest Part Cinder Well - No Summer Hailaker - Holding Madeline Kennedy - Sucker’s Lunch Dehd - Flower of Devotion Video Age - Pleasure Line Jenny O. - New Truth Skullcrusher - Skullcrusher EP Courtney Marie Andrews - Old Flowers Mountain Time - Music For Looking Animals Owen - The Avalanche Bob Nanna - Celebration States Coriky - Coriky Young Jesus - Welcome To Conceptual Beach Thanya Iyer - KIND Loyal Lobos - Everlasting Katie Dey - mydata Momma - Two Of Me OHMME - Fantasize Your Ghost Gum Country - Gum Country Upcoming (this Friday): Dent May - Late Checkout H.C. McEntire - Eno Axis Girl Friday - Androgynous Mary Alex the Astronaut - Theory of An Absolute Deadman Bully - Superegg Thank You, I’m Sorry - I’m Glad We’re Friends Naked Giants - The Shadow Bright Eyes - Down In The World Where The Weeds Once Were
Hockey Dad - Brain Candy: Just a fun, summertime alt-rock record. I've been playing it almost daily since it released a few weeks ago Thanya Iyer - KIND: Jazzy, electronic, experimental pop. Everything here comes together perfectly to create a whole that's greater than the sum of its parts. Young Jesus - Welcome To Conceptual Beach: There's been a ton of hype and praise for this, but I listened to it at least 6 times over the weekend, which is rare for me even for records I love.
Definitely backing Thanya Iyer and Young Jesus. That Thanya Iyer especially seems like it could be your jam.
I've already listened to Thanya, love that band, I posted them in this thread when it dropped! But I completely spaced on the Young Jesus, playing that next and then going through whatever anyone else is excited about.
I feel this as well, especially since I'm not into most of the current wave of emo/am more into the more traditional 90s-ish sound. Instead of listening to a lot of stuff from this year I've been digging and finding some relatively unknown or at least very underrated older bands. I recommend checking out Strictly Ballroom, Sarge, Edaline, Cross My Heart, Reubens Accomplice, Vitreous Humor, Denali, Engine Down, and Pohgoh to name a few
I feel similar. We’re in a hard lockdown here and only allowed to leave the house once each day for an hour to exercise so theoretically I have nothing but time to sit and listen to stuff, but I used to listen to a lot of music while commuting to work or driving on the weekends or taking long walks which I’m now not doing. I’m still checking out lots of new music and enjoying it, but I’m not giving things the repeated spins that I once did and I’m not able to go out and create memories soundtracked by these albums which means I don’t really fall head over heels in love with stuff anymore (other than the new HUM and Lawrence Arms records).
Based on your listed recs I highly suggest giving this record a spin Also suggest following the Strictly No Capital Letters FB page as Andy gives lots of great recs of bands playing that older sound, which is how I discovered this band
