thanks for the info! i was wondering what was going on but you could only tell so much in a fan shot IG video lol
I ranked Early November songs let's fight about it You Should Know: The 10 Best Early November Songs - The Alternative
1. Call Off the Bells 2. A Stain on the Carpet 3. Our Choice 4. Narrow Mouth 5. Frayed in Doubt 6. That's Not Your Real Name 7. Smell of This Place 8. Boxing Timelines 9. Nothing Lasts Forever 10. Hit By a Car (In Euphoria) Would probably be my top 10.
They're definitely more rough production wise and with the vocals, but not finding a single song off of them that you like? Wild.
There's some songs I kinda like but not enough to really spend much time with and certainly not enough to make my top 10. I like them more than I used to but yeah the vocals are kinda rough and the melodies/lyrics just don't really do it for me like their later work.
"Mountain Range" is probably my favorite TEN song, if I had to name one off the top of my head. Can't imagine not picking a single song from TRTC for a top 10 list. My whole list would probably be made up of TRTC and FAOT haha.
I'll give this top 10 thing a shot. In no particular order: Baby Blue It Will Always Be The Mountain Range in My Living Room Decoration Frayed in Doubt Call Off the Bells Narrow Mouth Perfect Sphere 1000 Times a Day What We Earn New album is really fresh in my mind so I had to give it two shout outs.
Five Years (original version) A Little More Time The Rest of My Life Wearing the Tie No Good at Saying Sorry Long Talks Outside I Want to Hear You Sad Fluxy Ashala Rock
Oh damn I totally forgot to include I Want to Hear You Sad! A Little More Time is up there for me too. This band is too hard to only pick 10 songs from.
wouldn’t be my exact list but nonetheless I like your taste and a few of these would easily make mine. cool to see someone else show some love for Wearing the Tie, imo the most underrated IC cut
wearing the tie very nearly made my proper list i love it so much — i did include it in the extra songs on the playlist
I hate doing top tens lol but y'all really got me thinking about it this morning and I'm waiting for a doctors appointment so fuck it, went into detail Boxing Timelines - took so long for this one to grow on me and even longer to become my favourite but fuck me if it doesn't hit harder with every year that passes. imo Ace's best lyrics, one of his best choruses and just an overall perfectly crafted song. this is one of those lifetime songs in this genre for me, up there with 23 by Jimmy Eat World A Stain on the Carpet - just a perfect opener. the atmospheric slow build into the explosion isn't that much different from the structure of, say, Sunday Drive. but the production quality and Ace's insane vocal change are the clearest signal you could want that they came back from the hiatus tighter and stronger than ever Sunday Drive - it's all the nostalgia baby but cmon. first time I heard this song I'd never even been in a relationship. 20 years later (!!!) and I've had a few and this song somehow hasn't aged a day inbetween, insane Figure it Out - YOU SHOULD KNOOOOOOOOOW In Currents - maybe the catchiest song in this discog and absolutely one of the best. idk how to put it in words, thing just fuckin m o v e s The Negatives - bit of a dark horse pick but this song marries that irresistible melody with the real talk/tough love lyrics so perfectly. I love the heavier moments on Imbue as much as anyone but it's these more contemplative songs that have really stuck with me over time A Bigger Meaning - I know we don't all love The Path, but I love it and I fuckin adore this song. the "yes, I, am" part has never failed to give me goosebumps over the many many times I've heard it No Good at Saying Sorry - just a beautiful goddamn song Call off the Bells - not much to say that hasn't been said, it's a song that felt like a classic the very first time you hear it. maybe Ace's best vocal performance ever, and if he dropped a fire blues album tomorrow I wouldn't be surprised at all Every Night's Another Story - GO GO GOOOOOO (I nearly did all his projects before I realised what a fucking undertaking that would be lmao, maybe a ranking for another day. but shoutout to classics like Sleep Means Sleeping, Sum and Substance, When I Hit the Ground, Reaction, Lions, Grace Period Over etc etc)
My band covered this song once for one of those compilations we used to do on this site and Jeff tweeted about liking our cover of it lol. Highlight of that year.
Dirtiest Things is a really, really amazing song. It's like a combination between Underoath Too Bright To See sound mixed with Every Night's Another Story while being fresh, dark, deep, beautiful and meaningful lyrically. Just an absolute joy.
The Early November Setlist at Le Poisson Rouge, New York Out of context, that’s a pretty great set. But they were hyping up their set as not missing any albums and a bunch of never before played songs from their older albums. They didn’t play a Lilac song. And the only never before played songs are the new songs, which should really have a couple more. Also weird to have them all at the top of the set. I will enjoy a set like this next week, but it just doesn’t match what they said it would be. It’s odd.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they had to skip a few songs tonight- Ace mentioned they had a hard stop at 10pm and they ended up flying through the last two and quick encore. So it could have been circumstantial, but I guess we’ll see. On another note, they sounded really, really good tonight.
