Can't vouch personally but my friend picked one up when he still used two snares and loved it. It worked really well for the style of drumming he plays, he said it gave his set a Benny Greb feel.
I'll have to listen to some of their samples later today. I'm tired of all the residue left on my head from all the gels and tape. Not sure if it's the sound I like/want, though.
@Cody those videos you shared in here yesterday are incredible, wow. I'm feeling very inspired right now haha
I saw Periphery this summer at Sweetwater Sound's Gearfest where they did a mini show + band QnA and it was awesome to see mat play live. The videos don't do him justice. Only thing is he seemed kinda douchey but they had just gotten back from Europe so I can imagine he was just tired, not actually a rude guy. Meinl has some of the best cymbals out there and some of the best artists. The only other company that comes even close to them sound wise for me is Sabian and that's a long shot.
I have a set of Meinl Soundcaster Fusions which I really enjoyed, though my crash and ride are both broken right now. I've been thinking about switching to something a little darker, perhaps Zildjian K cymbals, though I can't help but feel drawn a little more towards Meinl.
The Zildjian K Custom Dark is what my high school uses an they are a great set of cymbals. I like them a bit more than the Meinl Byzance Dark series but it's all personal preference.
I've tried out the Byzance cymbals a little bit and always felt like they were a bit too dark for me. I could see myself using one of their rides as a complementary piece to another ride in my set, but I wouldn't want it be my lead ride I suppose. Hopefully that makes sense haha
I get that. It's like how I want a ride with a dry sound but I crash on my ride too much so it's hard to find a happy medium (aside from the transition ride or the sabian monarch ride).
Exactly. I crash on mine too. I felt like I found a happy medium with the Meinl Soundcaster Fusion, but I've been thinking about branching out a lot this year into a slightly darker and drier territory. Gah, I'm just so excited to buy new cymbals soon (hopefully)! I gotta grab a new ride and a new crash.
I met him a few years ago at the merch table after their show. Talked to him for a few minutes, and he signed my album copy. Seemed like a nice guy then, but I can only vouch for that one experience.
My family is moving and today I broke my drums down for the first time in years. Probably won't be able to play them in a very long time, too. I had to take the heads off my bass drum to fit it in my closet.
I know that the whole "who is the best ever?" thing is subjective, but this guy really is the answer to me. There's so much going on here, its hard to take in all at once. A really great solo to watch just to sit in awe.
I've always admired traditional grip, especially after watching stuff like that. I wish I had those chops.
I've always been weird about traditional on drumset. I tend to only use it when I'm playing jazz as my left hand doesn't really stray from the snare or rack toms. It is a pain to crash with though. The only reason I even know it is due to marching band, and even then it's different due to the size of stick. Outside of those genre's I don't see the practicality in it.
It seems so alien to me. My left hand is so weak overall which is why I don't even try. Hell, I really don't even know how to grip the stick haha. I bet marching band focused a lot on building up both arms equally?
