Here's some links to some educational video channels I enjoy. Lots of great content here for drummers, fans of specific drummers that might be featured, and/or people looking to learn some rhythm/drum theory!

Drumeo: Features both short lessons and longer masterclass/clinic formatted lessons with pros such as Bernard Purdie, Anika Nilles, Jason Bittner, Matt Garstka, Thomas Pridgen, and Peter Erskine.

180Drums: Newer online lesson program similar to Drumeo. I got to meet Jake at NAMM this year and he's a really great guy. Really excited to see how 180 grows. So far they have some clips up with drummers such as Luke Holland, Aaron Gillespie, and Keith “Stix” Mcjimson.

Zildjian: Zildjian is one of the most popular and longest running cymbal companies. Their YouTube channel is a gold mine. They have their Sound Legacy series which talks to their endorsed drummers about their start in drumming and current cymbal set-ups as well as their Break Down Series where drummers discuss specific songs and then they have close-up video footage of them playing.

Vic Firth: Popular and longstanding drumstick brand/company. Their YouTube channel also posts lots of interviews as well as exclusive performance clips. They also post a lot of marching percussion videos.

The Drummer's Journal: Free online drum magazine with great interviews, contests, etc.

Drumming is my area of least expertise, but I know I love me some Ziggy Modeliste.

My drums have become a place to put clothes and other crap. Both rides have like 15% missing from cracks that I couldn't stop from running. I think my bottom hat is the only cymbal that isn't cracked, then again, I haven't checked in a while. I clear them off and play every few months when I get the house to myself and the drums themselves still sound great! It's a Gretsch Catalina Club Mod 4-piece with a 14x8 Pork Pie snare.

  5. I fiddle around on my brother's kit when I'm back at my parents' house, and I can hold my own on very basic rock and roll stuff. It's one of my many "I'd like to get better at that eventually" things.

I don't know a thing about drumming theory and that, but I can't tell you how much I love this live session with 5 drummers.

Skip to like 2:30 for the craziness. Puts a smile on my face every single time when the maracas come out.

Huge innovator and influence in the drumming world. "Cissy Strut" is a huge deal haha

@muttley What's your cymbal set up? Before my current kit I had a Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz kit. Most ideal jazz set I've ever had/played.

@troyplaysbass Check out some of the beginner lessons on the Drumeo page I linked to! Some of the beginner lessons are about 10 minutes long.

@George So excited to check that out when I get home from practicing today

I have Pearl drums from the Vision Quest series. I took the high tom off the mount and moved the low tom over, so I have the snare, rack tom, floor tom (which is unfortunately mountain to my cymbal stand right now), bass drum setup.

For cymbals, I have Meinl Soundcaster Fusion, which I love. 14" hi-hats, 18" powerful crash, and 20" medium ride (which is breaking in several places now). Thinking of getting the same kind of ride to replace it when I have the money.

Anyway, thought I'd add a video that I think is really good. This guy used to be in the band There For Tomorrow. I think his videos are pretty good from what I've seen, but this one in particular really struck me as the song doesn't have any drums to it in the first place. It's really inspired me to be more creative while improvising over pop songs, or really just improvising at all.

@Deathco_019 What size kick are you playing? Can't remember if we talked about this already or not

I'll have to double check, but I'm almost certain it's 20"

I play a 20" and will probably never play another size ever again. It's so much more versatile than a 22".

Closest thing to me playing drums is messing with an electric kit at Guitar Center when I buy new strings.

@iplaydrums 2 20" A Custom Projection Rides and 14" A Custom Mastersound hats. I originally had 1 ride and an 18" A Custom Fast Crash. When my first ride cracked, I was able to get it replaced with Guitar Center's warranty. After that I wound up using both rides and the crash was retired. It too was cracked to the point of no return. It had lost the sound it once had.
This is the only shell pack I've owned but I remember looking at the original Catalina kits before the Mods came out. I don't know why, but the 22x20 kick was the selling point for me back then. I've never used a 20x20.

@muttley Gretsch kits are fantastic. They're one of those "can't go wrong" brands, in my opinion

Interesting video for anyone curious about what drum heads are made of, how they're made, etc.

if anyone has good sample packs they use, whether you blend with your real drums or do complete sample replacement, let me know, im looking into packs to buy that have real drum sounds. i have plenty of drum samples for my electronic music leanings but i want to start recording some songs ive written that are gutiar driven and i feel like with the right samples i can program drums to sound realistic enough to get by for demos. but im interested in what sample packs others use. im probably going to buy the jay maas sample pack for 75 bucks, they sound amazing and thats not too bad of a price.

Zildjian has a new(er?) line of cymbals out - the S series.
    Introducing The S Family

I like the sound of the hats in that video. They're alloy so they shouldn't be too expensive. I'd like to hear some of the larger crashes and some different rides.

Edit: The 20" medium ride would be a perfect crash.

I played on these at NAMM. They were a bit too tinny for my liking. I know they've got Matt Greiner and the guy from Twenty One Pilots using some of them on their current tours. They reminded me of the Sabian B8s or the ZXTs.

Wow, really? I thought they'd fall between ZHTs and As after hearing that medium ride. Of course they pick up some endorsements so they'll appeal to a wider range of players.
You definitely get what you pay for with cymbals. I love the K crash/rides (the Zak Starkey ones) but at $400 a pop, I might as well get the S haha.

This thread is really making me want to start playing again.

@Deathco_019 That dude ruled, but that backflip was obviously the highlight of that video.

I didn't love them. But watching that video that Matt Greiner did for Zildjian, it sounds pretty good in context. They're worth hearing in person. And I'd definitely recommend feeling it and seeing if the weight is something you're into.

I'm glad to hear that! Was hoping the thread would inspire some people who hadn't played in a while, had never tried playing, and just conversation in general

Oh yeah, no doubt. I know it's flashy but I thought it was impressive. He does some other pretty cool stuff in other short videos he has.

  25. not to inject the grateful dead into yet another thread (ok well not JUST to do that) but the drummers are genius and add so much and are super underrated imo. they are the reason you want to dance to every dead song and add so much to the atmosphere of the spacey shit
