This was great. Honestly wasn't expecting the more dramatic side, but it was a perfect balance of comedy and a dramatic character study.

This was fine. Would rather watch The Room. Source material was more gripping as well

I’d call this film amusing. Tommy is a fascinating person and there is a very dark story to be told re: stardom and the American Dream and I don’t think this film touches on it enough. Tonally it was a bit all over the place. Never truly hilarious aside from a few of Tommy’s quirks, and while Franco does a great job at the accent, once again I have to say it only rises to “amusing”. There are some pretty dark moments in the book and Tommy is really a shitty person, and to have the peak of that be the fabricated shaving scene rather than the way he treats women or his overall obsession with Greg was a weak choice.

disagree, his shitty treatment of women and obsession with Greg was touched on pretty heavily given this was a comedy. I was uncomfortable with his behaviour pretty often, and while it may have been a little too redemptive in that regard I don't think they pulled that many punches though I admittedly haven't yet read the book

also, if you think he wasn't painted negatively enough I think it's strange to say you'd rather watch his own original work tbh

As strange as praising the film that ends as a relatively sympathetic redemption story? I can view Tommy as a bad person, find his story dark and fascinating and enjoy the original project for the trash that it is

Fair enough! I guess I differ in your opinion that the film let him off too easy but I also guess I wasn't looking for that when I watched it

would also argue that the entire premiere ending in hysterics directed towards a clearly self indulgent man that openly dislikes comedy is a pretty hollow redemption, but I get it. Didn't end the film feeling all that sympathetic for him and people liking him for the exact opposite of what he intended hardly paints him in a positive light

No doubt, I just think making up the beard thing vs his real harmful/obsessive treatment of people was a weird choice

I’m not sure this is actually a very good movie on its own merits, but the story is just so goddamn crazy that it’s interesting anyway. And James Franco does an uncanny impression of Tommy.

For anybody who saw this and hasn’t read the book, you should absolutely read it. The movie goes pretty easy on Tommy in comparison.

Finally saw this, Franco was incredible. So much better than I expected him to be - so many scenes where I forgot he wasn't actually Tommy. As a standalone movie it's good even if not a classic. The portion of the film where they're actually making the movie nailed the sweet spot of pandering to fans of the original movie while also just being genuinely funny (and scary) regardless of the viewer's prior knowledge. The rest was solid.

I'm very curious to read the book. Anyone listened to the audiobook version?

I'm still working my way through the novel but man, the more I read the more I wish this film tackled Tommy in a different way. I understand the weird timeline structure they have in the book wouldn't work, but I'm sure there was a better way to convey the deep, deep loneliness and anger and frustration that Tommy feels throughout the book. The fascination with "The Talented Mr. Ripley" by both Greg and Tommy is completely glossed over in the film, which is unfortunate as I find it the most gripping part of the novel.

The film was good, certainly entertaining but could have been so much darker and so much better while still retaining the comedic elements.

Got the book for Christmas, I’m not much of a reader but I know I’ll read through this in a few days. Can’t wait to dive in tonight.

I didn’t see it, but I guess James Franco won a Golden Globe for best actor and Tommy went on stage with him. His journey is complete.

I get where he’s coming from (it is HIS award and he only has so little time) but also golden globes are nothing and this is Tommy’s only shot. Would’ve been awesome to see him give a speech
