Huh, alright. I actually like the two new ones more than For You, obviously in a similar vein especially Wave but they just seem like better songs. Like if they're gonna do a big melodic poppy cut Wave isn't a terrible example of it I do hope we get some through and through bangers though rather than heaviness-attached-to-a-lighter-song. Give me another The Thread at least
I'm sorry but this still pic from the newest video of Jeremy, Mike and a frog absolutely killed me. Jeremy is like *LICK* and Mike is just........
i have to assume mike is happy with his place in this newer era but he still feels like a spare part assuming heavier tracks are coming though
I’m surprised they’re not utilizing him more. Even if it was singing or more spoken word but I guess his vocal approach doesn’t have that Octane Sirius XM sound aside from some screams here and there.
I found the video to be pretty corny but it was cool seeing Mason in there before he left and Mike’s outfit was fire. That’s pretty much it for me lol
Seems like Jeremy is taking more of a center stage spot both live and in recordings now. He did 90% of the crowd interaction during Summer of Loud while Mike hung back quite a bit
Yeah I even noticed in the latest band promo pics that Jeremy is front and center while Mike was behind with the other members.
i noticed in some press photos that there's a big open gap on the left of the band, which makes me wonder if he was Photoshopped out of them
Oh I noticed that too and he definitely was haha He recorded bass on the record and was there for the music video so I can only imagine he was there for the photo shoot that took place at the same location.
Mike has always been more of a low key dude especially when compared to someone as extroverted as Jeremy and when you take into account them wanting to reach a wider audience and being more in the scene limelight? It kind of all makes sense. Sounds dumb to say out loud but whenever I would see stories from Jeremy or the band’s insta - I noticed that Mike was rarely (if ever) there so it just became obvious that he probably likes his alone time much more. He’s been a total sweetheart the two times I met him though and Jeremy once offered to do a shot of jagger with me lmao. They’re all good dudes.
I think this is just a "me" thing so I'll have to get over it, but I find Mike a much more interesting vocalist than Jeremy. If I didn't already like TDWP there's nothing in these new songs that would make me want to give them a second chance. The heavy parts being so juxtaposed with the lighter parts feels like ADTR when they remember they have to pretend to be heavy sometimes.
mike's a lot more pronounced when they play the song live. wonder why the mix buries his vocals so much on the verses
while I appreciate both vocalists, I also find Mike more interesting. One of my fav vocalists in the scene for sure.
Mike's spoken word God Alone style vocals would be such a good fit for this era but they got so much shit for them during The Act that he kinda stopped them so much. So instead we get an out of place breakdown instead of a bridge and Mike is just kinda there. EDIT: Just checked the credits and saw Bobby Lynge from Fit For A King has a credit on Where The Flowers Never Grow so I guess he wrote that breakdown.
I am not big of fan of "pop" TWDP and the heavy part at the end of flowers seems so forced and as if they have to remind people they can still be heavy. Mike is definitely being utilized less and less for sure.
You know what, I'll give the Prada boys this: there's bands in this scene that are years past their best work and are just coasting along, wasting space and resources that could go to other bands that are popping off right now. Despite the unevenness of these new songs, I don't think TDWP is one of those bands. I just wish the songs committed to the style.
I still can't believe people hated on The Act. As I've said before it's my favorite, it's such an interesting progression for the band. I don't mind his spoken word style, I may just be fan boying but his voice can do no wrong for me.
I wouldn't mind Mike lending some clean vocals at some point. Some groups have made that transition well. Thinking of Garrett of Silent Planet in particular due to his yelly/spoken word tendencies on their first couple releases
The thing is that Mike can't sing like Garrett can, his old post punk band God Alone and whatever the hell Town of Lake is really illustrate that. But those type of vocals would fit much better (or would at least be more interesting) in this style than his screams which feel a bit shoehorned in.
Never heard of those, curious to hear what he does outside of TDWP. Often, when a screamer with a not conventionally "pretty" voice starts implementing cleans, they end up going for that whispery, Deftonesy type of singing or do that Chester pitched screaming stuff. Wonder if he could pull off one of the two.
