expectations are very high. i love this band's last two records. older stuff isn't reeeeeally my thing.
haven't actually listened to it yet! i got into them with the act, tried plagues and roots, didn't like em much at all, and just stuck to the newer stuff. but knowing transit is the start of their new sound makes it enticing to check out.
Oh yea you'd probably enjoy Transit, definitely more than Plagues and With Roots if you're more into their newer stuff. Hell I'd say to give Dead Throne a shot as that's probably my favorite from them as someone who loves everything, it's different from Plagues and With Roots but not quite like their newer era.
EP this week with tracks from the record. Varials did something similar years ago but it wasn't an EP.
I can’t argue with this because when I did my discography run I had Roots and 8:18 right beneath Dead Throne and the first Zombie EP. Believe it or not I enjoyed Color Decay more than The Act, but that’s not saying much because they are both very low in the rankings.
There are only a few songs I like from Transit Blues (to the key of evergreen & transit blues) and The Act (switchblade & chemical). I enjoyed Color Decay more than both. ZII is pretty solid.
WRAABB is a bit too risecore for my tastes but I like everything they did from Zombie onwards. Dead Throne and 8:18 have a couple songs I'd classify as fillers, and I have to be in a particular mood to listen to The Act. Transit Blues, Zombie and Zombie II are their holy trinity with Color Decay not far behind. Should revisit Space because I suddenly don't remember anything from it right now. Curious to see how they build on Color Decay. So far, they've been great at adapting to the increasingly genre bending metalcore landscape by implementing newer tropes into their sound without sounding too derivative. That said, Ritual and For You are way below the Color Decay singles so I'm lowering my expectations a little bit. I do think we're in for a diverse listen with that amount of tracks.
tbf WRAABB is the best risecore album ever produced. They mastered the sound and then went their own way.
I hope Mike is properly utilized on this album instead of being someone just shouts in the background over Jeremy's vocals and plays the third guitar every now and then. In 'For You' he felt like a spare part especially
I’ve always felt like TDWP's records were split into eras of specific sounds, so I just dive into whichever one I'm feeling at the time if I want some TDWP. I think it's also good groupings to point people to who want to get into them, depending on their taste. The last release in each group starts leaning much more stylistically into the next group. So, for example, if you like 'With Roots...' you'll probably like 'Dead Throne', and if you like 'Transit Blues' then you'll probably like 'The Act'. The EPs are like side-quests. MySpace metalcore/Risecore: Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord Plagues With Roots Above and Branches Below Serious metalcore: Dead Throne 8:18 Transit Blues Alt rock tinged metalcore: The Act Color Decay Flowers (I assume? Based off already released singles) Edit: Corrected 'Transit Blues' placing, included 'Flowers'.
Alt rock tinged metalcore for Transit Blues though? It's considerably heavier than their recent material and even leans towards post-metal at times. I'd group it with Dead Throne and 8:18
Yeah I’d def put Transit Blues in serious metalcore. Band was a bit lost during that time internally but man if they remixed/remastered that album it’d rise up in my ranking so much
Yeah, to be fair, Transit Blues could probably lean into either of those two. It's been a while since I've listened to that one actually. I made an edit on it now. :)
I don't even know if that's fair for Color Decay. It's just metalcore, I don't really see the "alt-tinged" part.
Maybe in a sense that their more recent stuff albums aren't fully as heavy as their previous releases? Still metalcore, but just less heavy.
I’m not sure I would really call the last two albums metalcore. They are definitely leaning into Octanecore and some borderline Buttrock.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. How songs like Salt, Watchtower, Noise, Sacrifice, Time and Hallucinate are anything other than metalcore makes zero sense to me. Of course, the softer ballads lean into... alt tinged I guess? but again, metalcore bands have always done that.
Unfortunately I don’t think they are going anywhere. Especially, as long as these types of bands exist.
I don’t like them because they’re inherently derogatory. Buttrock is just a term for alt rock you don’t like, and octanecore is just a term people use for heavy bands that start focusing more on melody, and they don’t like that.
I like me some Octanecore/buttrock but the recent output from TDWP ain’t it. I’ll check out the new album of course but my bar is low.
