definitely intentional, and my headcanon is that the new album closes off that theme with the lyric "now I live for the moon"
This may seem blasphemous, but I was a die hard RFTS/WP guy but even then never really connected with AJs writing. Thematically, his writing in those first two records didn't have much range and while I understand how people could love it, I just never shared the same views. His urgency, melody, and the overall compositions were always what got me. That said, there's some real maturity in this new record that I love. I think it's that underlying sense of hope and resignation to things may fall apart but that doesn't mean you have to. At least that's what I read in to some of these songs. TLDR - this record rules. AOTY contender for me and I never thought I'd say that about this band again
I've decided to listen to War Paint a bunch before going back to Reach for the Sun (which I've heard a couple of times but not gotten right into). Only reason is War Paint seems more urgent at the moment with end of decade lists coming up. (I already have a top 300 songs playlist developing haha.) War Paint is great. Heavier than Mother Nature for sure (guessing it is their heaviest record?). The big standout track for me so far is Everyone Left.
The chorus started playing as I scrolled over this post and the timing was scary good haha NGNYM, everyone left, and in my room are my favs on this record. I’ve been pretty much alternating between this and MN since MN’s release. Gotta give Reach more attention next.
yo what a trip, the exact same thing just happened to me as i read the chorus lyrics in your quote. word for word, line for line. it IS real. fuck its late, i need to go to sleep.
Everyone Left is great but if you don’t think I Should Leave Right Now is a contender for their best song you’re insane.
No one’s gonna need you more is the best song obviously, but War Paint is a close second. Siren is the most underrated out of the good ones.
booooo that one’s probably my favorite lol Parachute gets my vote for weakest on WP, I find the opening super grating for whatever reason and usually end up skipping it for that reason even tho I know I like the rest of the song well enough.
I know that one’s super popular, I’ve just never been able to get into it Agreed on the opening of parachute for sure, I’m not huge on that one either. Do like the bridge tho
War paint, work in progress, I should leave right now, no ones gonna need you more, siren, in my room, waves, everyone left, miscommunication, parachute are the best songs on war paint imho
that's always the song from War Paint I've connected with most lyrically so I don't care that it's one of the more musically rudimentary songs on the album. also the acoustic version is great
