I truly cannot keep track of who has been in this band beyond AJ, the tall guy who was in Every Avenue and Cody Payne (lol)
I just wonder how it impacts their songwriting, recording, etc. Is AJ a multi-instrumentalist? I can't really find any kind of credits for the last album with a quick search, other than the producer.
Yes, and Spencer was really great on drums with them - Life In Dreaming was especially a very important record for me (it turned 20 in February), but I liked everything from them for sure
It’s probably not an ideal situation when even fans who are dedicated enough to be talking about them in online forums can’t even be bothered to work out who is in the band anymore. It’s also probably not a massive surprise that their two best periods of work were in slightly more settled lineups, the first two albums, and then Mother Nature
Anyone slightly shocked that Fuck them All has become their biggest hit of the past Decade? It is solid, but was shocked to see its their biggest views by far on their Dangerous Summer Youtube (500,000+) and its definitely in their Top 5 of streaming numbers
When listening to all their albums, has anyone noticed the last 2 of theirs (Coming Home, Gravity) are quieter than the others? The production isn't bad per se, but as a musician myself, I've noticed there's a lot less treble as well. The vocals dont have the shine or sparkle of even the 2018 Self Titled. And everything seems compressed and not as open as the others. On its own these things aren't as apparent though. Listen to Self titled, RFTS for a little then pop on the last 2, and like I said, its noticeably quieter overall, and less high end/more compressed. Ironically Reach for the Sun remains their best produced for me. They really captured magic there. Golden Record I love as well. Amazing drum tones
yes - gotta be a mastering thing? Most music in my car i can listen to at like 30 volume in my car but more like 38/40 for their newer stuff
Thanks for the recommendation to listen to Hidden in Plain View's Debut. Def throwback sound: Its like Red Jumpsuit Apparatus had sex with The MovieLife in Warped Tour 2005's Parking Lot. Wat.
I was at my cousin’s wedding this weekend and she is a huge The Dangerous Summer fan. In fact, the ceremony and reception were filled with pop-punk references and songs; it was great. “Where I Want To Be” was planned to be her first dance song. When it came time for the dance, they pretended there were problems playing back the song and asked if anyone knew how to play it. You hear someone shout from the back “I do!” …. And it’s AJ himself. The bride’s sister coordinated with AJ to be there and the groom was in on it. He played the song for their first dance and it was probably one of the most magical things I’ve seen happen haha. Him and his girlfriend (they were both so nice) hung out out with all of us most of the night and we all had a great time.
this is so awesome. I was fighting tears when they played it opening for the Copeland/Anberlin show and in this kind of context I'd probably melt into an absolute wreck. Did he perform any other songs? That's such a cool thing to do.
For real…it’s already such an emotional song, and in this context I don’t there was a dry eye. He only did the one as their first dance song, but there was already a wedding band (who were also great) ready to go after him.
That is amazing. On most days I consider it their best song, and in that environment would be perfect. Thanks for sharing. Any video?
I guess that wedding inspired AJ. He is now engaged to his girlfriend. obviously, he probably had this planned longer than that haha
Considering the stories A.J has told about the behind the scenes at Hopeless when it comes to paying royalties etc. Wonder how this will all pan out. Im sure fine...but I loved Fat Wreck Chords
It’s either that or RFTS depending on the day for me. I have more specific memories tied to War Paint though so I’ll co-sign your statement.
I think I like Reach for the Sun a hair more, but they're both perfect. Can't believe War Paint has been around for that long. Still one of my favorite retrospective pieces I've ever done. https://chorus.fm/reviews/the-dangerous-summer-war-paint-2
I need to give war paint another go... I've always very much loved reach for the sun, but could never get into war paint. I know that's blasphemy but for w/e reason it just didn't hit me the way the first did.
