Nostalgia is a hell of a drug when they haven't had nearly the same amount of success as they did when he was in the band.
The crowd I saw them with during the War Paint tour was smaller than the Mother Nature tour. What success did they have back then exactly? They've been pulling the same crowds for years regardless of who has been in the band pretty much. Cody didn't do shit but fuck over his own band and their fans. I still have an unfulfilled kickstarter to show for it.
(It wasn't power chords 100%, but still) that would be a stupid, stupid (and unjistifiable) move. Just to engage with the idea - there were two other members recording RFTS that seemed to hold so much more water for the band's vibe (and didn't seem to be pos)
Cody put out a tab book for War Paint and it was all just power chords with one exception where he played octave chords for like 4 measures. There is a lot more than just power chords on the albums he was on, but not played by him. edit: or was it Reach For The Sun? Regardless, I remember when somebody posted photos of the whole tab book, truly embarrassing for him.
I think I remember there was that RFTS guitar tab book that I'm pretty sure Cody sold to fans "signed by the band" and then got called out for signing the whole band by himself hahh, would that be real?! (and I was just sure there were some parts of inverted chords etc., so not all power chords, but I might be wrong if those were his parts; don't care that much, seeing as the record's still so good, so any part had to be at least serviceable)
That’s what happened, yea. AJ knew nothing about it. I think he found out by seeing someone post it and he was “his” signature. Something like that. There’s nothing wrong with having a rhythm guitarist basically play power chords the whole time. But you can’t really give them credit for elevating the songs.
Yes self titled is so great. Was surprised how it went from everyone praising it at first, to it not being regarded as that great after some time. I think it has some of their all time best songs. Infinite being my favorite TDS song on most days. (Which should be their forever closer imo as well)
Self Titled is dope, but Mother Nature is DOPE, so I think that made S/T fall back in the list a little, at least for me personally.
Echoing what others have said, Cody literally played power chords but he'd often utilise the "Tom Delonge" method as I like to call it, where he'd stay on the 3rd and 5th note whilst moving the 1st note around. Few songs aswell where he'd do the whole octave thing where he'd let the middle string ring open. Nothing flashy but sounds cool. Source: been playing guitar for two thirds of my life.
The reason I felt his Power chords worked was because they made a really driving base, that Bryan would play all those loose melodic spacey with Delay lines. They each had completely different styles and approaches, and I think that became the Dangerous Summer sound in a lot of ways
Tonight’s show was pretty solid, only musical complaint is ironically that I think they needed a 3rd guitarist, but what they had worked. 2 shots on stage, a rowdy hometown crowd, and calls to go out on the town afterwards.
That's what I was thinking about hahh, like some Box Car Racer-type chords and tone with some droning notes
He was also doing that in lower guitar tunings than what you usually hear in the scene. That's something I immediately noticed at the time and stood out. Like Work In Progress is in C# Standard, ala Blink - Obvious.
Has anyone noticed the new lead guitarist they have, Marcus I believe, seems to play with less distortion? Some of his lead lines sounded almost clean, like he needs to put more distortion on imo
Not skilled enough to tell if it’s a playing issue or mixing issue, but they have a lot of guitar melodies (Way Down intro, No One’s Gonna Love Your More) that got muddy live. It took a few lines for the crowd to realize they were playing Way Down. I think this is where a backing effects track/keys could also play a role, but hard to differentiate with their two guitars.
Did that last year in Richmond on the record release show day. Was a good time, unique experience for sure.
It was just AJ and the super tall dude for most of the time, with the others joining late in the game, but yeah I seem to recall it being cool. Lots of shots.
