If the record is in the vein of the singles I think I’ll pass. I’ll give it a spin when it comes out but I don’t know that it’ll have any staying power for me. hard to believe that the same band that wrote RFTS, WP, and MN also wrote this.
Not into this at all, and man, those lyrics. I don't know. Doesn't feel like this album is going to be for me at all, but I'll certainly give it a go. If this is what makes AJ happy now, then so be it. Just feels odd that this is the same band that released Mother Nature just a few years ago.
It definitely sucks that I’m not looking forward to this. The band had been on a great run post comeback. Self Titled is super solid, MN was amazing and dug the last EP.
Personally I think Golden Record marked a dip in their songwriting that they've never been able to recover from, except for on Mother Nature, which was great.
I did dig the first 2 songs so far. My issue with the Songwriting is once you hear the first verse and chorus that is it for the entire song since MN. And they used to have those killer bridges everywhere. Like in Sins etc. Same thing when I heard Come Down from the EP. It's just once they have the verse and chorus they make the ending heavier and that's it. Something about MN.. I don't know if it was being in a bona-fide studio and staying there, Sam Pura possibly pushing them etc, the Songwriting was more complex . With twists and turns like in the song starting over. End of Mother Nature.. I just hope there's some more complex songs. Some of it is starting to give me a recorded at home vibe. But on a positive note this was much better the second listen. And if you zone out you will miss that major Cringe line lol
No offense to this person everyone has their own taste but...how? Maybe we are in a minority and Someday is really hitting the spot for BJ enthusiasts?
The youtube comments are just as stoked. They are making a lot of fans happy it seems. Who am I to judge? Literally not a single comment going "wuh?"
Watching now... didn't realize there was a video. When he sings in that high register, that sounds so much like God of Wine from third eye blind. And the music sounds like where is my mind by pixies meets sweater song by Weezer lol BUT I gotta admit, I'm starting to like it
This is me. I like most of the first two records and Mother Nature and a couple songs from self titled. Don't care for anything else.
I still feel like the first two singles haven’t been that far removed from the EP, which wasn’t all that far removed from MN — but I do agree everything post mother-nature has seemed far more simplistic. (And this song is trash) I also hope if they are heading back to the studio in the fall like one of AJ’s recent interviews, that maybe having the distro deal in place from the beginning will get them a little more focused… which maybe hasn’t been as much as the case with the self-released stuff being “we’re just doing whatever the fuck we want”
You hit the nail on the head for all of my issues with AJ's songwriting nowadays. I think the choruses have gotten more repetitive as well, but the big thing for me has been losing those bridges that he used to write. On those first two albums, the bridge was really AJ's secret weapon, and the bridges on songs like "Weathered" and "Never Feel Alone" and "Siren" and "Miscommunication" give those songs so much momentum and emotional oomph. So many hair-raising moments on those records, and so few on the EP or this album. I think the writing on Mother Nature wasn't quite up to the par of those first few albums, either, but it's their most interesting album from a production/structure/flow standpoint. I felt like Pura really did push them to think outside of the box a bit. His influence is sorely missed on Coming Home.
The song is fine imo. Definitely don’t think it’s trash. The guitar is repetitive but I kinda like it. The one lyric is a bit cringy but it doesn’t ruin the song for me.
At least we finally know why they’re called The Dangerous Summer. Dude was just getting road head being a hazard on the streets, crossing medians, etc.
This song isn’t great but I don’t think it’s as bad as some of these reactions. It’s probably even better than wait in the fog
