Not entirely relevant, but I think the Criterion page would be the crowd most likely to appreciate this.

Anyway, I couldn’t wait for Criterion to eventually get this, so I bought a bootleg. Excited to go through it again.

i'm happy FWWM is getting a 4K upgrade (although the next Lynch release should've been the new 4K master for The Straight Story). planning on watching The Shrouds on Criterion Channel soon, so if i like it, i'll end up grabbing it as well. need to revisit Nightmare Alley, maybe the extended cut would be better.

the premise had a lot of potential, but at some point it felt like it was telling multiple stories that weren't going anywhere interesting (i did look up what happens during the rest of it and wasn't that impressed). the dialogue was pretty stiff and too expository, and the editing felt incredibly jarring. while i thought Diane Kruger was doing a great job, i really didn't like what i saw of Vincent Cassel's performance. i know his character isn't supposed to be likable, but someone else could've played his character and given a more interesting performance.

maybe i'll revisit it one day, but it felt boring in some places and too heavy-handed in others, and by the time he broke his wife's hip i had lost interest in continuing.

  12. Man, I disagree almost whole-heartedly. I have to rewatch to confirm, but I think it might be top three Cronenberg for me. It was just so intensely personal and had everything I look for in a Cronenberg flick - grotesque use of technology, paranoid/conspiratorial intrigue, and in my opinion, a strong cast and performances. But I can definitely not see it being for everyone. To each their own!

you're good, man. i did appreciate the concept of the shrouds/graves as enabling a different kind of voyeurism, but just couldn't vibe with the rest. i probably should give it another chance, but i don't know if that'll happen anytime soon. glad you enjoyed it though!

The Worst But Best Person You Know

I cannot express how excited I am for Altered States, been waiting a time for a 4K of it. October overall is just crazy stacked, guess I’ll be waiting for the November sale for a bunch of them. AS however I’m preordering ASAP

I’m not a big Altered States guy unfortunately, I struggled with that one quite a bit. I did love The Shrouds though, and am also very excited for Nightmare Alley and A History of Violence.

What does this look like? Did someone burn the 1080p Amazon stream onto a Blu-ray and toss a 4K label on there?

really enjoyed The Shrouds. unique take on grief and quite funny at times.

AHoV absolute classic, murderers row of character actors absolutely shredding it throughout, also a sweet sweet 96 mins long
