Finally some Hou. Not my favourite of his works, but a more than welcome addition. Merrily We Go To hell is fantastic too. Interesting to see them release another title from a World Cinema Project box set as a standalone release. I feel like I’ll complain about it every time but it feels like such a waste of resources when so many of those WCP restorations still aren’t available at all. I can’t even see Trances being a popular standalone release.
I’m torn on this. I have numerous boxsets now. They are fantastic, and cost effective. That being said, there is just something so aesthetically pleasing about the clear plastic standalone blu ray releases. They are just excellent. The cardboard stock from the boxsets (see: Casavettes or Three Colors) can feel a little cheap, even if the content is second to none. I’m also torn on digipacks. Some people love them. But there is definitely an OCD part of me that wishes they were all clear plastic cases.
So just got my $10 gift card from Criterion the other day. Was also able to snag an extra one from someone on the Reddit boards and preordered Memories of Murder and Flowers of Shanghai blu-ray’s. It looks as though the Flash Sale will be on Tuesday (23rd) of next week. Here’s my wishlist, been saving up since November... 1. The Silence of the Lambs 2. Andrei Rublev 3. Brief Encounter 4. Yi Yi 5. Jeanne Dielman 6. Wings of Desire 7. Badlands 8. The New World 9. Pan’s Labyrinth 10. Tampopo 11. L’argent 12. Barry Lyndon 13. Crash 14. Minding the Gap 15. The Ascent I’m open to suggestions. I would be willing to swap out a few titles.
Those $10 gift certificates they send out are great. I only realized last summer that you could stack them and that they're actually gift certificates and not "promo codes." I ended up having all four I had gotten up until that point in my inbox and was able to get Tokyo Olympiad for free (including shipping to Canada). I've got another 2 now (from October and another the other day) that I'll use to grab either Mandabi or Smooth Talk when the next sale hits. The sales, both Criterion's and Barnes and Noble's, have been largely useless for me the last few years considering shipping and exchange rates but with these codes it seems I'll be able to get one or two free discs a year.
got the Fellini box set, Lola Montes, and Rossellini's War Trilogy in the flash sale today and they gave me a $50 loyalty gift certificate after that. overwhelmed.
Got the Bruce Lee collection and the Agnès Varda collection. I've never seen any of her stuff, but I'm excited to dive in.
Weirdly was deciding between the same two collections but I went with the the Bruce Lee collection. Bruce Lee was obviously kinder to my wallet, though the Varda collection would undoubtedly be worth it. So many of her films are available on Criterion Channel at the moment, though, which helped me make my decision.
Do The Right Thing is one of the best modern CC releases, the transfer looks stunning and the supplementary materials are top notch
Grabbed a bunch. No boxsets this time, only stand alones. Had $70 in credits and ended up covering the rest with some gambling winnings from earlier this week. Andrei Rublev, Jeanne Dielman, Brief Encounter, Smooth Talk, The Great Escape, Hiroshima mon amour, The Ascent, Blow Out, Crash, Pan’s Labyrinth, L’argent, Badlands, Yi Yi, Wings of Desire, Tampopo, Safe, and Barry Lyndon.
I grabbed Y Tu Mama Tambien, I Daniel Blake, The Passion of Joan of Arc, Amores Perros, and Minding the Gap from the flash sale. Waiting for the Barnes & Noble sale in July to grab Come and See, Fast Times, Taste of Cherry, and A Hard Day's Night.
When I Get Home is streaming on the channel now. Would be absolutely awesome for that to get a physical release into the collection.
