Got to see a screening of Renoir's Grande Illusion today. Not my favorite work of his (I prefer The River and Rules of the Game) but it's always exciting to see a major work on the big screen. Contemplating a screening of Hoop Dreams tomorrow, which I haven't seen yet, but idk if I wanna pay $15 for it.
I'd pay that to see Hoop Dreams if I hadn't. It's only a couple dollars more than a lot of movie tickets at some theaters.
I went to that Hoop Dreams screening and the film is sublime. I could probably call it the best doc I've seen, at least best feature length. Steve James was there for a Q&A after, which I didn't know was happening and was pretty enlightening. He didn't get to many questions, but that's because he was giving such detailed answers and kind of going off on tangents too. So glad I made a point to go and finally see the film.
Has anyone watched any of James' other works? I saw Life Itself which was pretty standard and informative. The programming kept raving about Stevie when introducing Hoop Dreams today so I may seek that out.
My main arthouse/rep cinema announced their summer slate today. De Palma, Hitchcock, Truffaut, Zulawski and Rohmer retrospectives and one of screenings of Badlands, Mulholland Drive, El Topo and a bunch of others. Gonna be a good summer.
Spike Lee is introducing Ace in the Hole and A Face in the Crowd in NYC on the 21st. This reminds me that I'd absolutely love A Face in the Crowd on Criterion.
Dekalog (!!!!!!!), Blood Simple, The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum, Valley of the Dolls and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Cat People (1942), Night Train to Munich
Huge. Definitely in for Cat People, Blood Simple and the Mizoguchi. Will get Dekalog eventually, but since I just watched it this year I won't be in a hurry to see it again. It's amazing though.
I agree with you. I've only gotten into his 80s and 90s work within the last year or so, but each one has left such a significant mark on me. I still regard Certified Copy as the best film to come out this decade.
Boyhood! Short Cuts! Guillermo Del Toro! also The Tree of Wooden Clogs and The Executioner, which I'm not familiar with
Boyhood for sure. Maybe Pan's since I have the other two. That's their 3rd Altman this year too, which is great!
Finally! Got to revisit Clouds of Sils Maria for the first time on blu. One of the finest contemporary films in the collection. And maybe Assayas at his best?
Hope it's ok to post here but I'm trying to downsize my collection/get some extra money for TIFF.
