Recently I was able to connect with post-rock band, The Collect Pond, which is songwriter Danny Moffat (Vocals/Guitar), Chris Anthony (Drums), Roger Maranan (Keys/Bass), and Ben Bonadies (Guitar/Bass). The band is excited to release their new LP, Absence of Something, today via Candlepin Records.

Thanks for your time today! Your new record is called Absence of Something, which releases on September 5th.. Where did the inspiration come from to name your new album this?

Danny (vocals/guitar): It’s about being economical and interesting at the same time, leaving the listener with more, but wanting more; the idea of getting the thrust across, but being vague enough to leave room for interpretation. There’s only eight songs, genres hop, and many tracks are less than three minutes long. It’s an esoteric way of saying it’s an attempt at maximum efficiency.

What made your band want to make music together, and what’s been the most rewarding experience in The Collect Pond’s tenure?

Danny: We were all friends first before playing music together. I think that has been good for us to collaborate on the music, negotiate how we spend our time, and stick together.

    3) Your sound is pretty unique! What was your band members’ music upbringing like growing up?

Chris (drums): Blink-182 and the Drive-Thru records era of pop punk/emo. I used to run to AbsolutePunk.net. I would go to that site more often than kids go on TikTok these days.

Roger (keys/bass): Gin Blossoms, Elliott Smith, The Clash, and The Ramones growing up. Lately, I’ve been enjoying Switcheroo by Geli Haha and Dead Star City Tours by Petite League.

Ben (bass/guitar): Selected musical influences from my Dad’s iPod: Crowded House, Counting Crows, The Cure, Beatles, and Guster.

Roger: Oh, yeah +1 on Counting Crows, too!

Danny: I grew up near the Canadian border, on the U.S. side, so I got a mix of Canadian radio and US print media (RollingStone) and television (MTV). In high school I played in many bands of different genres.

What continues to inspire you to make more music with The Collect Pond project?

Danny: The Collect Pond keeps opening doors, not financial ones or anything like that, but socially and creatively it’s been cool. This year we’ve had some nice things happen. It’s our third album on Candlepin Records and we also dropped our first song with Hit the North Records. We put out a remix with Colin Domigan. We played on the local CBS television station. Bierhand Productions started making music videos with us (I also act in his films). One of our songs was licensed for an indie film. We play shows all around. It seems like people want to work with us, and we like working with them.

Out of all the songs that are found on Absence of Something, which track is your personal favorite at this moment?

Chris: I like “Cemetery Man” a whole lot.

Ben: I like “Every Little Thing is the Same”.

Roger: “Cemetery Man” for me as well.

Dan: “Every Little Thing is the Same” is one of my favorites for sure, from a producing and mixing standpoint. There’s also an instrumental on the album called “Net 30 Invoice” that I keep coming back to. That song was taught to me in a dream. In the dream, I was in a bar where this guy brought out a whiteboard and taught it to me with a marker and pointed to the parts on the board. It was like he taught it to everyone who walked in there. I woke up, remembered it, and recorded it. I had to jeuje it a little, but the song was basically there when I woke up.
