Nah I’m fine with that lol

God’s nature transcends human categories. I don’t see a problem for people to say God can be a woman, theologically speaking.

So why can't a fictional fantasy lion have Meryl Streep's voice?

This is a really weird and baffling conversation. It's been a hot minute since I read any Narnia, but I don't see how changing Aslan's gender changes the allegory at all. A Christ-like figure is a Christ-like figure; whether it's actually supposed to be Christ or not shouldn’t matter.

I’m not being immature. I simply stated that I wouldn’t like it if they gender swapped Aslan because of who the character is. I never said anyone has to agree with me, nor have I tried to pursue anyone in here to agree with me. I simply just went into more detail about my opinion on it when people asked.

I don’t think it’s a big deal at all that you don’t view it through the same lens as me. More power to you. We’re all adults here with our own beliefs. There’s nothing here that should be taken personally.

But what do beliefs have to do with a fictional character? Aslan is not Jesus. Aslan is an invented character. Who voices the character doesn’t and shouldn’t have anything to do with something from the real world. It is a fantasy series. They’re not adapting the Bible here, which they have many times and he’s almost always white. Christians can’t even be accurate with their own depictions, so why should a fictional fantasy series?

In the book Aslan is an incarnation of Jesus. He tells the kids that in their world he goes by another name and he will meet them there. Lewis was sometimes too on the nose with his beliefs and bringing them into his books, unlike Tolkien. I don’t think my views on it should hold any more or less weight than others views on it. I’m not trying to force change by stating my opinion.

As for the adaptations of the Bible in other mediums where Jesus is white, I have no control over that either. He shouldn’t be white, but I don’t control what show/movie producers do.

That’s fair, but it’s not like it actually matters for the character of Aslan at the end of it. They probably won’t even make that reference anyway because it’s not needed at all to tell the story.

Yeah I won’t be surprised if they don’t keep that relation. I like Greta as a director though and I like the general story, so I’m still looking forward to this film and hope it turns out well

Only thing I’m worried about is that Netflix is attached to it at all

I think they made a deal to give it a theatrical release but it’s only a 2 week deal exclusively with IMAX screens

Such an interesting thread to catch up on because I don’t really have a hard opinion on anything, but I kept going through different sets of thoughts reading these posts today. Kind went along these lines…

I love Greta’s work. I love Meryl Streep, not sure I love her as Aslan; would love her to go full Miranda Priestly as the White Witch though. It’ll be interesting to see what they do. She has the gravitas for Aslan, so I get what they’re going for.

I do also think authorial intent should matter in most media adaptations of literature. There are plenty of other things you can play with in Narnia, but it feels like Aslan and the seven main kids of the series shouldn’t be included in that. (A good example is Wheel of Time, I think. Rand and Moiraine had to be identical to their book selves. Everything else was beautifully upheaved casting wise and it’s been great.)

Removing the Jesus is Aslan nature of the story immediately invalidates the adaptation in my eyes so I hope they don’t go that route; it should be okay for Christian art to be Christian art (this applies to any religious art), even in a post-Christian environment. Especially when it’s not “evangelizing” as art, it’s just Jesus is a Lion on this planet where good and evil battle. They’ve been beloved books for what, 70 years now? Why change the literal core tenant of the series now? Especially even when non Christians still are just as fond of the series despite the bluntness of the allusion.

tbh I’d love to see a take on The Horse and His Boy that addresses the racism because I always found that setting fascinating or maybe tackling the closing duo. We’ve done Lion, Caspian, and Dawn recently enough. Engage the whole series. The giants under the mountain would be fun; I would get so anxious reading that one as a kid.

Sorry this is rambling. These were some of the first books I ever loved as a kid, so I was getting all “sides” in here today and playing off of them as I thought through it all. Haven’t read them in like 20 years, but they’re so vibrant in my head because of child me.

Some of my reaction was because of the person who said it. Probably came in a bit hot
